Red Necked Grebe and Young

This young red necked grebe is not quite a baby anymore, no more piggy back rides on momma or poppa.
Every once in a while the parent would pluck out a small downy feather and feed it to the little one, it supposedly assists digestion. Note the turtle taking a look around in the second shot...

I'm envious, Mike; they used to nest in our bay, but not for many years now. Great captures.

They are not as numerous near my place either this year, but the water level has been higher this year than the last few, so local nesting spots may be fewer.

We mostly have painted turtles in these waters (although snappers have been found in the area). I don't think the painteds could do much harm (size)....but who knows?
