nice but on some of the pics the processing makes the people look a little off with the skin tones

Thanks for the input. I understand the proccessing causes the skin tones to be off. I'm ok with this. I was going for a different look besides the normal plain Jane processing or the over the top HDR usually done with these type shots. I didn't plan on getting many people liking this look but I'm interested in hearing everyone's take on them.

Other than the skin ones, I really like the set. Would have liked more group cycle and running shots to get the feel of the competition.

Ian.

Which are the worst offenders on the skin tones? The ones around the lake had a major cast from the sun coming up and I guess the look I went with didn't help any with those.

There are more on flickr. I do have a few more of the group cycle and running that I could process. I just didn't get as many of those because it was my first time at a triathlon and I wasn't very good at getting around the right spots.

Thanks for the comments.

If you illuminate an object with orange light, the object looks orange. The rising sun is usually orange. Same goes with snow. Everyone thinks snow should be white when actually it usually has a blue tint.

I have a colleague here who has recently gone nuts with the same type of processing, one that seems to put a "haze" on everything. To me it just looks like the contrast is off, or the camera has a light leak in it causing an extra lightness in the image that is distracting. I do not like it.

I actually "like" the processing. You are trying that film look. I would probably tone down the yellow cast a bit and maybe adding some cyan color to balance out the yellow cast. Maybe adding a bite more contrast. For the composition, I don't really like them. I was expecting to see some bold, in your face compositions. Compositions that screen "I am here and to photograph these athletes in their glorious achievements." These compositions are like you are taking snap shots from the side lines.

True that

Yes, the PP is a film look. I went to the triathlon to get some shots of my buddy who is in the last couple of pictures in this post. I wasn't trying to capture any glorious achievements. I'm not sure why you had any preconceived expectations on what I was trying to capture. I also wanted to get some candid pictures of the other people participating and watching the event. I shoot mostly portrait stuff so I guess my approach was more like a street photographer who stumbled into a sporting event. I wanted to get the atheletes in the context of the environment around them. I don't really have the gear to shoot those intense closely cropped action shots getting every bit of the athlete soul in a single of the 10 frames I shot in one second. I value any comments good or bad. Thank you for taking a look at this set and giving your opinions.

I actually really like the colours you've used.

Ties in with the event name for me.

The swim start (with them swimming) and the last shot are the weakest. Were each of the photos meant to have the same post? If so the WB is slightly different on each. The second and second to last photos are the strongest of the bunch.

If you take the time to have a look at Scott's work, you may want to re-think your comment above. :)

My comment had nothing to do with his work. ;)
