not much to add, the title says it all.
I'm looking into getting my first SSD for about 200$ and was wondering which one, as there are so many different brands
I had my eye on the crucial m4, intel and ocz
P.S most important to me is 1. reliability 2. overall speed (close second)

Thanks

If reliability is your first priority dont get an OCZ. Look at Intel first. Samsung 830 series is also getting extremely good reviews for reliability. Crucial M4s are good as well.

nothing wrong with OCZ.... there was an INDUSTRY wide issue with sandforce controllers. They are still market leaders in terms of share in the SSD market.

I have a 30 GB Vertex (their first product) in use for 4+ years now. (granted, that is hardly a basis to determine their quality).

I use and can highly recommend the Crucial M4 SSDs. I have three so far and they have been great! Just make sure you upgrade the firmware.

Read up on their failure rates, especially of Vertex 2s. Complete crap, cheap memory etc. Not just Sandforce issues. Market leaders doesnt mean its the best product, theyre the cheapest but you get what you pay for.

I had a Vertex 2 running as a boot drive for Solaris, no data being stored on it, just a boot drive. All ill say is at least it was part of a mirrored RAID since it didnt last long in such a light duty role.

Agreed 100%. I still don't trust OCZ after messes they created years ago and they've repeated some of it with how they handled SSD problems due to the controller they used. They may not have designed the controller but their handling of the situation was poor, as is the usual for OCZ. They've also skimped in other areas at times with their SSDs.

Intel, Samsung 830 or Crucial M4 are all I'd generally recommend. There may be other good ones out there but those three, of the widely known big sellers, have earned a pretty solid reputation.

There's plenty wrong with OCZ. I've had close to half of my OCZ SSDs either die on their own or bite it during firmware updates (which are basically mandatory if you want your system to work correctly).

On the other hand, I've bought about the same number of Intel SSDs, only one has ever had an update (a X25-E in one of my storage boxes), and none have ever failed.

I'd go with Samsung, Crucial, or Sandisk Extreme.

Should work well. I have the 128GB in my work computer and it has been fantastic.

Crucial, Intel, Samsung and Plextor seem to have the best reliability ratings.

I'm not sure I'd personally buy a Plextor yet, I didn't think they'd built up a long enough reputation yet, but I would expect quality from them.

I bought a plextor because they were the only drives that had literally no bad reviews on newegg.
