Lense to Body Fit

I rented a 100-400mm lens when I put it on my 60D there's about an
1/8 inch or so of play rotationally. My 18-135mm and 50mm both fit tight with no play.Is this play normal.

On a rental lens I would imagine its probably seen a lot of use and abuse. I would suspect that is the cause of your play. The 100-400 I had sat snug on my body with no play.

Look and see how much wear is on the recess for the lock pin.

Forgot to add this is the second lens from the same rental company (they sent me this one free for comparison)that is doing this I am going to try it on
another 60Db body my friend has tomorrow.Could this cause the camera to take out of focus pictures.

Usually it is the UV filter that does that. Too much rotation would cause the lens to eventually loose contact and the camera would behave as though it doesn't have a lens attached.

The lens doesn't have a filter.
I spoke to Canon support and they said the movement is acceptable. They also said that if two lenses are doing the same thing that is is highly possible that this camera and lens combo are not compatible.

A wink of rotation movement is okay... an 1/8 inch is A LOT more than a wink of play. I'd be afraid to use a lens with that much slop in the mount.

If the lens moves at all other than rotationally, it would possibly effect the image quality.

Macroimage's comment is that the 100-400 really doesn't like filters very much. So it's good there isn't one.
