I hope you understand me when I say "this look" but how do I get this look in grading?
What techniques are used to get this sort of professional theatrical realse look from the dslr?
I've seen many many many videos shot with DSLR's and none look this good. Seems like it can be used in an actual film.
Its also all shot with available light.

here is the link to the video. it's by Philip Bloom.
It looks so crisp and just perfect without looking too soft/too sharp too contrasty. I just don't understand what he did. Are the difference between zeiss instead of canon glass playing this big of a role?

But hey, they say it's not the gear right:rolleyes:

Phillip used Canon glass in this video paired with a C300 and a 1DX.

I don't know how Phillip produced this look, but I bet it has something to do with decades of filming experience and having access to a lot of great gear. ;)

In his blog he mentions using CS6 with Magic Bullet Colorista II and Looks 2.

He also claims in his blog the 1DX is far superior to the Mark III for video work.

He's also produced this "look" with the 5d2. Im sure that the years of experience help greatly, but theres also some information that can be given that will push me towards that robust look. F*uck, I dont know a word for it. It just looks so wonderful lol. I do have colorista and magic bullets.

Fantastic cameras, bloody nice lenses and yonks of experience grading = that look

I'd love to achieve similar one day but understand that it takes a lot of time and effort doing trial and error.

He used canon lenses I've been told and this look has been achieved with a 5d2 in other instances.

He used a few different techniques, one of which was taking multiple videos at different exposures of the same scene and then using layer masks to give it the HDR-look.

That was just for the shot with the sky and trailer so they both show at a good exposure

years of experience help.

doesnt matter what camera you use. you can get that look and feel from almost anything. some cameras just have more detail in the footage than others to play with.

read his blog posts though he explains everything that he does. the thing is he doesnt post what settings he used because realistically if you copy his settings you will not be guaranteed to get that same look.

Ive always loved Bloom's work. I think a lot of it is the detail from the full 35mm sensor. The C300 is 15 grand afterall.

Most of the footage in that video came from the 1dx

Part of the look may be a result of his Prolost picturestyle profile.

Most dslr filmmakers seem to be using Marvels or CineStyle.

After a quick search on google I was not able to locate a site to download the picture style.

One question, what is Phillip talking about when he mentioned All-I? Is this a specific recording mode not available in the mk 2 or mk 3?

All-I is available on 5d3, not sure about 5D2.
Prolost that he uses is also not a picture style you download, but the way that you tweak the "neutral" PS. Just pull down sharpness, contrast, and another item(I forget) a certain amount. If you do a search for Philip bloom picture style settings on google, I'm sure you'll find it

What does recording in All-I mean? Is this a specific resolution, frame rate, or combination of both?

AA remember also that when you said available light a good DP will make it appear that way. As far as the color i would say most of it is done in grading. With the grading that is available these days and the way the systems for compositing work. I would no be surprised if it was more post work than in camera, but that is also don under the supervision of this ver talented director. It is a very fine look.

First step........ Take the lens cap off.
