My sisters LOVE getting all glammed up for shoots a few times during the summer. Unfortunately, one is going back to school, and the other will be joining the Navy, so this was sort of a final summer hurrah.

We shot in the middle of the afternoon, so the light was pretty terrible. I tried using a fill flash for the first time, but some of the photos ended up pretty blown out. However, my sisters LOVED that look, so I kept 'em

I am BIG into B/W conversion right now, so I have been working really hard on those (aka I didn't even do these in color ).

This is the first of 3 locations we shot at!

Just a tip. expose to the background (sky etc), then use the manual power on your flash to expose to the subject.

are you using the sharpen tool?

Thank you for the tip! And no, I am not using the sharpen tool, but in Silver Efex Pro I am using the structure tool for detail

lol what is Silver effex pro? You dont use photoshop?

While I believe everyone should have their own style, I NEVER use the sharpen tool (or equivalents) on images of pretty people like this. It creates such a grain and contrast and removes all the soft features from a woman. In this instance, it makes her skin tones look extremely patchy and really distracts from her eyes, smile, hair etc... In my personal opinion, I would not use the plugin and learn grey scale conversion via photoshop (not simply using the desaturate tool, but curves, level, B/W tool, saturation, dodge burn etc). It will make the world of difference.

just my opinion... I hope it helps!

I like the color one as well, but didn't like the coloring on the ones I converted, before I converted them!

In SEP, the structure tool is a sliding scale that allows details to be preserved. It is a lot different from the sharpen tool in photoshop (which I have as well...SEP works with photoshop).

My sisters and I all have fairly ruddy complexions, and to even those out would be making them look like something they are not. I remove some blemishes and acne scars, but do very little else to their skin, because they are natural.

I feel that the tools in SEP are great because they really give a beginner like myself a lot of control in the b/w conversion.

Does SEP allow you to do conversions without a grainy effect? I think that's what I don't like about the b&w in this set.

I believe they are mostly grainy because the ISO was too high, and many of them are cropped.
