Light modifiers, no matter how well they work, are always going to rob you of flash power. This makes them very limited in usefulness in situations where you have to light a large area with a single light. And anyway, they tend to only work over fairly short distances. We point the umbrellas toward the person on the opposite side so we have nice and even distribution of lights through the whole group. Of course this is in most catholic/darker churches.
