After a great 14 years, my parents had to put the family dog to sleep last night. I was in highschool when Philly became part of the family. I had always wanted a dog growing up, but my parents had always said no (now being a parent myself and having a dog, I understand why) Philly came to stay with us on a temp basis when my older brother moved back home from Fl. When he finally found a new place to live and tried to take philly with him, he was met with some resistance. My parents, who would "never allow a dog in the house" were adamant that Philly was going nowhere, and was now part of the family. I have never seen my parents so upset. This is the first time going through something like this for all of us. I guess time is what it will take.

Thanks for your time.

RIP Philly Ripley

I could never get a new pet so soon after losing one. I gotta feel the hurt and let myself get over it naturally. It's because we love the pet that it hurts so much. To go out and get a new pet while you are hurting in order to stop it hurting seems to me to be disrespectful to the pet you lost.

Basically, when you put your pet to sleep, I think you're taking their pain and making it your own so they don't have to suffer it. To suffer that pain for them is a mark of your love for them, and I could never do anything that would ease that pain.
