I'm not a fan of switching lenses at the beach in fear of something getting inside and was going to rent something better than I have for a good friends engagement session at the beach. Could someone recommend a lens that would work well for this?

24-70 works well as a portrait zoom on a crop body.

I too prefer the 24-70 range for portraits on a crop body. I use a 28-75 and generally stay at the longer end than the short side. Your style of shooting could be different though.

I have a friend who shoots at the beach all the time with her 1Ds and she has never had any issue with stuff getting in. Don't be afraid to swap lenses, but if you really are a quick jog into a store or even your car will be a safe place to switch lenses.

Or save yourself the additional cost of renting another lens by slapping the 50 on and moving your feet... there should be plenty of room on the beach to get in the positions you want :) Obviously this won't be any good if you're going for a really wide-angle shot... it depends what weird and wonderful ideas you're thinking of trying!

Just use your 55-250mm IS, that will work perfectly plus you don't have to worry about damaging it. If you want to rent something better for the job.....

1) 70-200 f/2.8 IS II
2) 70-200 f/4 IS
3) 135L

I wouldn't suggest too wide of a lens, since there will be lots of people in the beach, a tighter shot will eliminate random people coming into the frame.

Remember to use flash or a reflector to get rid of unwanted shadow from the harsh sunlight.

This would be my choice with a good quality filter added to completely weather seal the lens.
