That's nice. I like the mixture of star colors and sizes and the subtle look of the Lagoon.

Thanks guys. I don't think I clipped the black point. Not sure though.

I noticed something interesting though. Its a set of stars that looks like Saturn. I can't find it in any catalogue where its identified as a double or triple star system. In fact, I'll bet its just an asterism with the large star being much closer than the other two.

Is there any way to get this identified? If not, I'd like to name it. I think it'd be a cool target in the hand controllers of goto telescopes.

The inset is a 100% crop of the area.

Thoughts?

I found it from your initial post using Unimap and the Tycho-2 catalog. It's listed as TYC6842-01056-1.
J2000 coords are RA 18:03:43.103 Dec -23:26:22.9.
The STScI Digitized Sky Survey shows it at those coordinates (although yours looks nicer).

Steve (who should be working).

Wow, thanks Steve! Does is show what type of star it is? I've seen it listed as a single star but I'm curious if its an asterism or potentially a 3 star system.

I didn't really dig any further. The plate solver gave it a name and position and I looked it up on SIMBAD and DSS. From the DSS shot, you can see that you haven't discovered Planet X. I think asterisms are in the eye of the beholder and you may have just stumbled on the exposure that makes this one look cool. It reminds me of Galileo's drawing of Saturn.

Yea, I wasn't really looking for the IAU to name it after me or anything. I just thought it might be a neat one to have it added to a tour of multiple stars on hand controllers. I guess that'd be Meade or Celeston.

I'd still love to know if these 3 are related at all.
