I thought this would be useful for those keen to get our websites ranking higher!

Interesting concept. A concise way of educating. However, it may not tell the whole story. For example, no mention of Flash. Did I overlook it? While neither a "violation" nor a "block", a 100% flash site is nonetheless not the best for SEO.

I think this is meant to be an up to date, as in August 2012, look at SEO.

In terms of SEO, flash went out with the dinosaurs!

Interesting. Thanks for posting.

So, is my signature considered link spam?

Yes, but Flash continues not only in use, but in the development of new sites.

I just thought that the table should have mentioned negative seo techniques not necessarily violations or blocks.

Doesn't matter. thanks for posting.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting. Anyone have any info on how to track SEO results in sort of a scientific manner? Like I can follow these SEO tips and guidelines but at the end of the day, what are some ways to track that those changes were effective?

^ 1) Google Analytics 2) Webmaster tools 3) sales + asking your clients how they found you.

I get these random contacts via email and phone calls from SEO services wanting to "help" get my name out. When I ask them about results, they constistently measure by where I am on Google rankings. I tend to ask them if a better measure might be increased sales, but that seems to be beyond their comprehension.

But they are SEO services, not improving sales companies! If you want to improve sales that's your responsibility to design your website in a way that converts your visitors. The SEO company's job is to, as you say, "measure where you are on Google rankings" and then improve upon it.

There's also an excellent tool (you can use the free version) that allows you to track your rankings for specific keywords. It's called Traffic Travis. It also gives you an overview of how well your website is SEO'd etc.

I respectfully disagree. Imagine them in a business meeting with a large corporation, selling their SEO services. If they couldn't connect the concept that their services ought to increase sales, they don't deserve a seat at the table.

^ I seriously detest SEO companies (particularly when they call me and then demonstrate that they don't know as much about SEO as I do), but how can you expect for them to guarantee or promise that your sales will increase ? What if you run a terrible business ? They can do a fabulous job at getting people to your site, but if you're not able to close the deal for whatever reason (bad site, photos not up to par, prices too high, **** symbols on contact page etc.) then that isn't there fault.

I didn't say I expected them to guarantee they'd increase sales. I said that a better "measure of success" of SEO would be increased sales. You could be all over Google, but if sales aren't going up, the energy is going in the wrong place.

By the way, I hate them too, I do this as an exercise to frustrate them.

Wanna have some fun? Do what I do. Google something broad and generic such as "seo consultants", find the firm, then reply to their email asking them why their company is on page 47 of google? Ask them if they will do the "same" for you.
