Hey,

Might be buying a 10D which is bundled with this lens, I'm just wondering how good it is as my starter lens- next lens I will buy later is the 50mm 1.8.

Cheers,
Adam

Not the worst, not the best. It will take the pictures until you get the lens you really want. My wife's boss has this lens with her 10D and we have seen some very nice photos from it.

Cheers, great site there.

"2. An inexpensive 50mm prime would be a really nice complement to this zoom making up for its deficiencies at the longer end and giving a low-light option."

I'm guessing for a first starter lens that this compares with the kit lens that comes with a 350D (the other option to me buying a 10D).... I'm also going to buy a 50mm 1.8 as soon as I can afford one so this might not be SO bad.

Personally, I would opt for a new 350D if that's a choice and get a kit lens by all means. The other lens is basically one of the 2 worst Canon makes judging from owner feedback. Maybe it'll do a decent job now and again but it doesn't look too inspiring. The kit will also do that and give a more useful range for day to day shooting IMO. The 50mm is a great little lens. I used it at the weekend for some indoor portraits.

How much is the 10D with this lens? Condyk has a good point depending on the price you are thinking of paying.

It was just an item I saw on E-Bay...

Right now I have £450 to spend on everything (body, lens, memory)... so its going to have to be 2nd hand... I can probably go up to around £500 if I need to.

If I can find a cheap body the Tokina AF 193 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 looks like a good lens to start with, as long as I can get the 50mm 1.8 too.

You won't find a 350D with lens and memory for £500 unless you're very lucky and the seller is desparate. A 300D is very likely and for quite a lot less now. That is a fine camera capable of superb results. Might be worth posting a WTB UK: advert in the Marketplace to see what people want to let go. 300D with Kit lens, mint and boxed and then add a 50mm 1.8 should be easily possible for your budget. Don't accept any rubbish or high prices as there are plenty around looking to upgrade.

I just missed out on a 350D for £470- bid £450 (not incl. memory). May be able to get a 10D body, memory and the earlier mentioned lens for under £500 and then perhaps add the 50mm 1.8... or try negotiate and get it without the lens and buy a cheaper Tokina lens as a starter.
