i am going on a 2 week trip to Israel to visit some family. i am considering bringing my 50D and 24-70 (my only lens at the moment). to POTNers who have been there, i ask did you feel safe carrying the camera out on the street?

i have been to the country many times, but never really paid attention to cameras. the police/military presence on the streets is tremendous, which lends to safety. most of the time i will be walking around with my cousins so i am thinking the safety WONT be an issue... just wanting make sure.

on the other hand, maybe ill just take an S95. ive seen all the sights, and have pics of most. so i guess i would mostly look for pics of going out with my cousins and their friends, family shots, and some scenery from walking around. granted, all have been with crappy PnS and not a lovely 50D+24-70 combo, but still i hesitate to bring bulky equipment, having to carry it around in 90 degree heat.

i guess mostly i am thinking out loud, but welcome suggestions/opinions/thoughts.

I think you already answered all your questions. You know that Israel is one of the safest countries, that there thousands of tourists with all kind of cameras, and that it may get unbearably hot in summer so you will hate your camara bag. Now only you can decide if you want to bring a big FF camera, or a P&S.

I'd take the 50D etc. I haven't made it to Israel myself (yet), but what's the point of spending all kinds of money on camera gear if not to go to cool places and take cool pictures when you get there?

ETA I think the 50D is a crop, even if it's a big clunky bastard.

Any time you start thinking that you're a big shot, try giving commands to someone else's dog.

Hey I think Israel is one of the safest countries, here you can find tourists with all kind of cameras so you can also take your camera without any safety worry.

thanks for the feedback guys

i decided to travel light - will be borrowing a friend's S95 in lieu of my 50D+24-70. from what my family tells me, its hotter than usual there now, and id rather not carry bulky stuff with me in the heat.

hoping to post some pics after
