You are welcome topdeck. No the rest of your post was excellent, but sometimes, it is hard to find the exact right person in your same exact situation, and the rest of us just have to make educated guesses. So asking the way you did may lead for very few responses in some cases.

Now like I said, based on what I have read now, it simply appears they are optically the same, just the fact the hood is removable has changed. In reality, that may not be 100% accurate.

Thanks Raylon.

Yup, I completely understand and sympathize with the remarks that pop up from time to time on forums, especially ones as popular as this (kinda like having a bigger fishing net!). ;)

Anyway to those interested, it seems as though it's safe to say that the Samyang/Rokinon 8mm has a narrower FOV than the Sigma. This will require a tilt up of roughly 7.5º in order to stitch the sky properly. This shouldn't be an issue as the only area lacking content in the full 360º VR would be where the tripod head is located. Would still love to see a stitched sample but i guess I may have to be the guinea pig this time...

It will mean buying a new head, but that would still be cheaper than buying a new Sigma 8mm (who's auto focus button i've tapped in the OFF position since the f3.5 was released!). The guys at Nodal Ninja seem to be all over this so looks like i'll be going down that path.

Thanks again for your help!

Probably going to buy one of these, but does anybody know if this version has auto aperture? I know the old one you had to set the aperture manually on the lens, correct?

Still manual as far as I can tell.

Is there any benefit of the removable hood if I have a crop body, and will not upgrade to FF for a while? Or should I save the money and get the first version?

Cheers :)

+1 for the first version on crop. You will bump into things with this lens, there's no way around it. It's not like you can remove the hood and use a filter, so you'll just leave the hood on full time.

Oh, and be prepared to find your feet in the frame quite often.

Agreed, get the original - another reason is that you can often find it for sale much cheaper. Buydig regularly has it on sale for around $225 if you can stand to wait and check every once in a while or watch the marketplace thread.
