First off, I'm still learning how to do this, and I'm amazed at the great pictures that you guys put up. I always say I wish I could get the 'smoothness' that you get, and I think I know a part of why I don't (Other than equipment). I was just using a flash, and the light was too harsh. I had this piece of white packing sheet, which is kind of like a dryer sheet, and I taped it over my flash. I'm still not getting the 'smoothness', but it's a lot less harsh than it was.

I took these this morning, and I stumbled across this small flying critter. As I was focusing, another one landed on it's side (Pic #1). When the one on it's side flew away, it looked like there was a half of the same kind of insect hanging off of the one. I actually tried to NOT get the broken insect on the bottom, but now I wish I would've...are they mating, or birthing, or WTH (Pic #2)??

What a lovely collection Ace.

I would be happy with most of them if I shot them.

Thats a really nice collection. I believe the Robberflies are mating. Your grasshopper is actually a Katydid, looks a lot like the one I just posted yesterday. Really like that bee shot, great eyes on that guy.

Good idea about diffusing the flash. That will really help ease the harshness. A lot of guys around here have links in their posts (signature) to home made diffusers. Might want to check some out for ideas.

Nice job Ace!

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it! :D

I asked the other day about eliminating the harsh light & someone showed me their homemade setup. I stumbled across this white packing sheet so I figured I'd give it a go first and I've been pretty happy with the results. I'll make something a bit more durable when I get a better flash.

Lovely collection Ace.

I have seen the half a mate thing with a dragonfly. Presumably one of the couple gets predated whilst they are mating and the partner can get rid the others remains.
