300mm wide open (f5.6) at 1600 ISO. (The funny lines in the bokeh are from the screen on the porch.)

QUOTED IMAGE

That's a great looking cat. However, tiny web-sized images tell me absolutely nothing about image quality. (No offense.)

I like to print 20 x 30 images on occasion, and flaws that show up at 100% *do* manifest themselves at this size.

True. Here's the RAW file. Judge for yourself. I should note that this was taken with a rental lens before I bought mine. But check this out and see what you think. I won't take offense if you think it's soft.

Pulled the trigger. I'll love extra reach compared to 70-200 f4L IS. I have heard both of them are equal in IQ, but extra reach got me !

Just pulled the trigger.

I *really* hope I get my 6% cashback as well. (TopCashBack Link Here. (external link))
(Note: I have no personal affiliation with this webpage. I just know that they advertise 6% cashback on Adorama purchases.)

@ TheRightLight, I read on here somewhere that if you think that you got a soft copy of a lens, it is probably just the focus tolerances of the camera and lens being both out in different senses and that you can get Canon to calibrate your lens and camera together to get the best performance. I'd start with micro adjust first though.

PS congrats on the purchase.

I just bought one too. Sold my 35-350L for it. I figure I can put my 70-300L on, and in a Think Tank digital holster, and stick my 40mm 2.8 in the pocket of the case for when I need something wider, and end up with better IQ throughout the range, in a smaller package to carry around.

We'll see if I regret it- but for that price, I figure it's a fairly low-risk gamble.

Yep, Adorama's price went back up. They just dropped the price to tick me off.

You can get them refurbed from the Canon site, though. (external link)

I picked one up too when I saw the notice on another forum. I'm going to replace my 100-400L in order to gain a lighter package, better IS, and maybe a bit of extra sharpness too.

The 70-300L is nice, but its not quite the IQ of the 70-200 f4 IS.
