The 70-300L is nice, but its not quite the IQ of the 70-200 f4 IS.

I read a ton of different reviews, including Bryan's. Some reviews found the 70-300 better and some liked the 70-200 better. There's one point they all agree on, though. The 70-300 is at least as good at 70mm and much better at 300mm than the 70-200 is at 280mm with the 1.4x TC. I wanted as much reach as possible and not have to fiddle with a TC, so after much thought, I went with the 70-300. The size was also a big factor as the 70-300 fits easily in my bags mounted to the 7D. The 70-200 would not.

I agree with you.
I had the 70-300L and I never used it. So I sold it 4 months or so back.
Then I thought that a 2X III would be the answer.
Now I'm going to get a 400 5.6L in a little while to get to 400.

Regrets?
I do regret not giving the 70-300 more of a chance.

Oh well.

Wow, now it back at the Canon refurb store, after mine shipped out today. The refurb would have saved me about $70. Not that much difference, though. Oh, but half of the $70 I'll get back from Mr Rebates. So now the difference is only about $35 for new versus refurb. I can live with that :)

Why do you say that?
If you just got the 70-300L then you got a great lens!
The only thing is that comparing it to one of Canon's Very Best lenses the 70-200 f4 IS is asking a bit much.
The 70-300 is sharp as a tack and the AF is very fast and the IS works great.
Just a great lens.
I was comparing it to the 70-200 2.8 IS II and the f4 IS of which I have both.

Anyone who got the 70-300L has a Great lens.

Just that it's a big dent in the pocket haha, other than that I'm pretty happy with the deal!

Rounds up to be about 1180 after sales tax (CA)

You'll be even happier once you start using the lens. It's a great piece of glass.

Finally got to try my new 70-300 last night. Thus far I am very impressed. Sharp wide open, good reach and definitely worth $1259!!
