My 24-104 F4L lens started to develop annoying zoom creep. The zoom creep started when the lens was a couple of months old but was only minor so I did not send it in to Canon at the time as I did not want to be without it. Yes I know I should have had it fixed under warranty. So the lens is now two years old and the Zoom creep developed to the point where it has now become very annoying and I have stopped using it as a walk around lens which was the reason for choosing it over the 24-70.

So I though it was time to send it in to Canon to have this rectified. The lens was sent off to canon and I received an Email from their service centre in the UK informing me that it had been forwarded to one of their authorised repairers as I would get a quicker response. The repairer sent me an estimate for the repair which I authorised and to my surprise it turned up this morning so I was over the moon as I was not expecting to have this for the bank holiday here in the UK. Just over a weeks turn around was a really good response. However I put the lens on my camera and checked to ensure the Zoom was now going to stay put. The zoom creep is now significantly worse than it was when I set this lens in for repair! What was an annoyance is now a fault that would prevent me trusting this lens for use on a tripod the Zoom moves that easily and I am £160 out of pocket.

Has anyone else had a similar issue and if so how did you resolve it? I have contacted the repairer however it is Saturday morning here and no one is in the office so I will have to wait for a reply Tuesday to see what they intend to do about it. My fear is that this is going to be one of those occasions where the lens is out of use for a significant amount of time going backwards and forwards by post to the repair facility to try and get this rectified.

My 28-135 used to creep bad, but I never used it professionally so I wasn't in a position where creep would be so detrimental to my shooting experience. However, my colleagues who do use lenses that creep during weddings were never above the idea of rubber-banding the zoom ring. If that's a little too cheap, these guys actually sell neat looking bands: http://lensband.com/ (external link) .

It's too bad about your repair fee though.

Wait unitil Monday, call the repair center and explain it's worse than it was and you'd like it fixed right this time.

This, you paid them to fix it, so have them fix it.

That's unfortunate. I've had my share of bad luck getting items repaired as well. A 50mm lens went back 4 times. And my 100-400 went back twice (technically three times). We are either talking with delicate hardware here or the monkeys putting these things back together need to slow down a little and check their work more thoroughly. I spend more time & money dropping off or picking up the lenses than the repair was worth.

I'm in Canada. Isn't that weird!

The call to the repair centre next week is a definite. My fear is that despite Canon telling me to send the lens for repair that they will say its normal for this type of lens. I will either get the problem fixed or my money back, but I don't want to end up with the 24-105 left with permanent zoom creep which will annoy the hell out of me in a walk around lens. I have seen the rubber band idea but it doesn't sit well with me having to rely on a rubber band to get an L series lens functioning as it should.

which would be the truth. i believe the new 24-70L has a lock to keep the barrel from extending.
