I will start off by saying I know very little about this game. As a kid, I couldn't stand soccer. So when I was given this game to shoot for my school, my expectations were not very high.

This game was an 8pm game, and the field lighting wasn't too great. My settings were 1/1000th, ISO 10,000 @ f/4 (Nikon 200-400). Even then, most were (or still are) underexposed. Looking back, I probably should have went ahead and bumped it up to ISO 12,800. Luckily a Nikon D3s was available, or else I would have been in trouble with my D7000. Samples are below. The game also went to 2 overtime periods (0-0), and a penalty kick won it.

Now to the questions...

What are you favorite positions? The SID gave me free reign, but I stuck mainly to the corners. Are the "sidelines" good for defense shots?
What's the etiquette about shooting near the goal? How far away should I be? Is a remote OK back there?
Say you're shooting for one team... how much time do you devote to the goalie? Or is it just about following the flow of the game? There were only a few decent shots on our goal, so no goalie "save" shots.

Any other tips or comments would be greatly appreciated. I have a day (yay!) game on Sunday, so I'd like to go in a little better prepared.

Game winning penalty kick.

Just some noise reduction in Lightroom 4, along with bumping up exposure and shadows in most of them.

Just got back from today's game. I'll upload a few and post them here, but here's my whole gallery. http://www.utsports.com/view.gal?id=123997 (external link) 1st half stuff was shot with my D7000, 2nd half with UT's D3s... all with a 200-400/4.

Well, the D3s was the king of low-light photography until the D4 and 1DX both came out. That night was the first time I really pushed the ISO on one.... truly spectacular, but that's why it was a $4000+ body. Like I said before, my personal camera (Nikon D7000) would have fallen flat on its face.
