About 3 weeks ago I got a "box o' goodies" from B&H. I haven't been very enthused to shoot much, and I've been pretty busy, so the box went unopened until just a few days ago. Yup, it took weeks for me to even bother looking at my new pano head or the two lenses I got, the 50mm f/1.4 and the 85mm f/1.8.

Three weeks. Unopened.

So I finally broke down and threw the 85mm on the 20D and loaded the new 2GB CF card. I aimed at a few things and was impressed by the AF speed and the f/1.8. Very nice indeed.

Then it sat there for another 3 days.

I finally got the urge last night to actually try it out, so I attached the flash and went looking for some cats. I didn't have to go very far, since 7 cats allow me to take care of them. I walked into the bedroom and found 5 of them sleeping on the bed. Lazy bums! It was only 7:30 at night and they're sleeping already!

So I woke them up re-arranging the blankets and pillows to get appropriate backgrounds, flipped the flash towards the ceiling and fired away.

The first one here is "my" cat, JC (full name Jean Claude von Cat, named for his acrobatic style of fighting/playing). He was not a very cooperative model, and was constantly distracted by the dog who kept walking in to see what I was doing.

These two are OD (on the left, aka Uncle OD since he's the surrogate father of all the other cats) and Major (full name Major Havoc, since he was a hellion as a kitten). OD is constantly cleaning the other cats if they're within reach, and the other cats often put themselves within reach for some extra attention. Major often takes full advantage of this habit.

Anyway, this lens is impressive. Small, fast with aperture and AF. I like it.
I was also very impressed by the small amount of sharpening done on these pictures. Very nice indeed.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Scott:
These are awesome. I did not know you had cats. We have more in common than I thought. We have five. I have a 7 month old that needs serious evaluation. He is friggin the craziest animal I have ever owned. Words could never describe it. Thats funny about the lenses. You have so many, that you actually have to find time to open them. My wife thinks i'm an *ss for buyind all these lenses. I told her "well I could be cheating on you."
She did not think that was very funny:evil:

Great shots Scott! You've really captured their personalities!

But I have to say that I am astounded that you left the box unopened and "unplayed-with" for so long! I would have been shooting the dust bunnies under the couch with a delivery like that! :)

WOW! Great shots, and it looks like a fantastic lens, the detail and sharpness of those photos is indeed very very impressive.

Excellent shots, Scott. I'm amazed that Canon makes two lenses that you didn't have until now.

Nice shots, great cats!
We have 6, including an orange one with freckles like OD has, I always thought he was unique!

I ignored the warning, and looked anyway. I'm glad I did.

The eyes on JC are fascinating. That is my favorite of the two.

Nice work.

I have a "JC" too. He responds to Ceaser. If I ever get a dog, his name will be Brute. Oh, and these are really good cat shots. I have a heck of a time with the reflective nature of my cat's fur. It just wants to be either too dull, or reflect and blow out.

Lovely cats and SWEET lens, Scott.
Jean Claude is very beautiful in that photo and I just love those cleaning expressions.

Three weeks without opening the box?

I was waiting for the cats pics. Was the first expected step.
Now I'm waiting for the panos! Come on! Whats -20C for a big guy like you?! ;):):):)

Cheers,
Jaime

Thanks for the comments folks! I guess I'll have to hunt down the other 4 cats since people seem to like them.
Oh, and the dog.
Oh, yeah, the parrot too!

Now aren't you glad you have some more pics to look forward to? :-)

I do plan on getting out with these lenses and the pano head soon. JMAS's latest bridge shot has got me itching to get out, but I haven't had time. But this weekend is going to be warm (45F!) so I may hunt down some winter scenes or Xmas lights or something. I'm looking forward to First Night Boston - I plan on making a full day and night of that event.
