Our trusty XSi was stolen the other day, thankfully with just the kit lens on it (although we don't own any other lenses besides the nifty fifty).

So I'm kind of forced into the market because right now I'm shooting with my iPhone and a friend's Oly EPL-2 (more on this below).

I'd say I'm at the "advanced amateur" level. I shoot mostly on Manual and Aperture Priority, and sometimes Shutter Priority. I've begun to really utilize some of the other features like adjusting white balance, exposure lock, exposure compensation, etc. I'm also getting into minor post-processing using iPhoto. I've been taking photography "seriously" for about 6 months now, and want to continue to get better.

I primarily like to shoot family pictures, portraits, and the occasional landscape /wildlife. Very rarely I experiment with street photography, but not really my cup of tea.

My budget is $1500, but I'd really feel comfortable if I can come in quite a bit under that.

Here is what I'm considering, please comment:

(1) 60D or 7D: I want to upgrade to an xxD series instead of another Rebel. Having played with these cameras, I love the build quality, the additional controls, etc. However, I'm not a huge fan of the weight, esp after being used to an XSi.

(2) Mirrorless: So here's the big dilemma. I've dabbled with mirrorless before, as I purchased a Sony Nex 5N and used it for about a month before selling it. I loved the IQ, I thought it was noticeably superior to the XSi, even with the kit lens (although I'm guessing if I had some better lenses on the XSi then IQ might have been comparable or even better than the NEX). But bottom line, the IQ was more than good enough for me. That being said, the NEX system had too many cons for me, which is why I sold it. I found the available lenses to be lacking, with only the 16mm pancake (which I found to be mediocre IQ wise and almost useless focal-length wise for the majority of my pics) being truly compact. Otherwise, I felt I might as well just lug around a DSLR. I also found the AF system to be slow, and missed a viewfinder.

That being said, I LOVE the rumored new developments coming from the NEX system: A NEX 6 that's prob going to have an integrated EVF, an updated and faster AF system. And Sony also announced new lenses, 2 of which would be must-haves for me: a pancake zoom, and an inexpensive 35mm prime.

So bottom line seems like the NEX system is taking steps to alleviate all the cons I had about the system while maintaining all the pros.

Also, there is the Micro 4/3s option, as I'm currently using my friend's OLY EPL-2 and it's a solid camera, but for various reasons I think I'd prefer the NEX system.

I know there's the new EOS M, but I hate being an early adopter to new technology, and since this is Canon's first foray into this segment, I'd like to wait at least a year to see how things shake out.

So it really comes down to buying a 60D/ 7D vs. the new rumored NEX 6 vs. maybe another Rebel (like the T3i).

Thank you! I was so upset, as I felt I was really getting familiar with all the different features and abilities the XSi had to offer.

You could also take a look on the new Pentax K-30 (sub 900dlls), weather sealed and with wide dinamic range sensor (16mp sony sensor) for landscape this would be wonderful and a also very nice selection of primes.

If you are not a fan of the weight of the larger bodies- take a look at the T4i. You'll get the latest bells and whistles- and the touchscreen will make up nicely for the missing controls- to an extent. There's a lot of enhancements to the t4i that kind of make it a mini-60D+ . With its new 18-135 STM lens- an awesome combo to start out with- again.. AF system is relatively quick and very accurate- even with other lenses... The 18-135 STM is a definite improvement over the older 18-135. The only thing that the 60D has over it- imo- is ergonomics ( size and controls) and viewfinder (pentaprism vs pentamirror).

7D if you are looking at the sophisticated AF system. I still prefer this body when using the heavier lenses though. It's a balance thing.

EOS 5D III, EOS 7D,EOS Rebel T4i, Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, Canon 24-105L, Canon 18-135 IS STM, 1.4x TC III, 2.0x TC III, Σ 50mm f/1.4, Σ 17-50 OS, Σ 70-200 OS, Σ 50-500 OS, Σ 1.4x TC, Σ 2.0x TC, 580EXII(3), Canon SX-40, Canon S100
Fond memories: Rebel T1i, Canon 18-55 IS, Canon 55-250 IS, 18-135 IS (Given to a good home)...

Once I've got the savings I'll be going Xsi ((Xsi has some dead pixel rows and is at 80% of rated shutter life) to 7D (can't justify a 5DIII at it's pricepoint, and want the improved AF as I do a fair amount of sports shooting so no MkII) , having originally had a 10D (still have but it typically sits nowadays); the extra weight may take some getting used to for you and you'll be back to using just the iphone if it's too heavy for you. If you don't mind the weight depending on your subjects a 5DmkII may be worth consideration as well (factory refurbs seem to be quite reasonable), coupled to the prolific 24-105 f4L.

Noticing you're not carrying a bank of lenses or really getting much beyond standard focal lengths I may say take a good look at the Fuji X-Pro-1 it's got 3 lenses, what is often considered comparable IQ and is a follow up and supposed step up from the Fuji X100, so it's not so much a venture into new technology and it's out and established for a while now (I'm pretty sure both Fujis have image threads going here on POTN as well). Something to consider if you don't need a DSLR just the control that if offers, and don't like the weight.

I just upgraded from my xti to the 60D. It feels way better in my hands and it feels lighter then the rebel. I am about 5"3 and 110 lbs. So I am not very big. I am also finding the camera very easy to navigate. I skipped the 7D because I will probably end up donating my xti and add a 5D in the future. Until then I will concentrate on purchasing quality glass.
My two cents worth.

Thanks everyone.

Well, turns out my in-laws had an old XSi body lying around, so I've borrowed that for now. I think this will give me some additional time to shop around while using a camera I've familiar with, but eventually I'll have to buy my own camera, haha.

I went to the 50d, from my XSi, and haven't looked back. You can buy used or open box new ones on ebay for about half the price of a 7D. I've looked at the 3/4's and the others, and I think if you use your camera for travel, that is definitely the way to go. I want to do more, and like the different lenses.. and I've already invested in some lenses that will keep me in the crop bodies for a while to come.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

I went from an XSi to a 7d. The 7d is a VERY intuitive camera to shoot with, I found the menu's very easy to negotiate.

I went from XSi to 7D...best upgrade to date, outside of going from the 18-55 kit lens to the 17-55 f/2.8

I went the 24-105 route instead of the 17-55 the f4 aperture was sufficient enough for me. The focal length was better for my style of shooting.

I would get the 7d. I love the af on it. I had to learn it for quite sometime as im not one of those that just get it.

hope this helps...

Funny thing is I went the opposite way (in a round about kinda way). When I got my 5D2 I sold my 7D .. then I got an XSi to fill the cropper gap. It's a nice light/small/cheap and capable camera.
