Nifty fifty or pancake?

Looking for a cheap prime for video. Need silent focusing ang good IQ. Reviews for the pancake 40mm seem to praise the near silent focusing but i loved my nifty fifty's IQ curious about opinions.

Well, the 50 f/1.8 has about the opposite of "silent focusing" so I think you've made up your mind.

Yep, Nifty is loud. IQ is amazing and its 1.8 vs 2.8 so that is something to possibly consider. But if your running auto focus you would have to invest in an external mic or something I would imagine.

i like the nifty fifty, but it's atrocious focus ring makes it a pretty poor choice for dslr video, with all the manual focusing that entails. the 40mm pancake is a much better video lens. i would think that the 40mm coupled with the upcoming ef-m 22mm would make a nice combo for video.

Has anyone used the 40mm for video and if so how loud is it?

The pancake is a no brainer and couldn't imagine what the nifty would like on video.

It was made with video in mind, with the STM motor that keeps AF silent. However, I'm not quite sure it will work on a 60D as I thought it was for the T4i and models coming up...

Really? So its technology is specific to certain cameras?

It'll work on any EOS camera as far as I'm aware.

Tough choice. I have a dying 50 1.4 (need to fix, hope they replace it soon with a new model) and the 1.8 is a good value. So is the pancake but 2.8 isn't very fast and it's nice having a really fast lens at times.

If you are doing video and need silent then the pancake seems to be the best choice. If you don't need the audio from the camera then it wouldn't matter.

I use a 40 as a body cap on my 5D and have a Sigmalux in the bag for shallow DOF.

The EF 40mm STM is not silent. It's quieter than a 50mm 1.8 but you WILL hear the AF motor when shooting video.

It sounds pretty quiet when you are holding the camera but when you play back the video, the AF sound picked up by the camera's microphone is actually very loud.

The 40mm STM ONLY works for continuous video focus with the 650D. The review of the 40 at Lenstip.com had this to say about the foucs

"its accuracy is beyond reproach. In studio conditions it didn’t miss one single time so it deserves a round of applause. "

I have one on order, comes in on tuesday 8/28/12.

Thanks for those videos sounds like the new focusing system is only silent with the T4i. That changes things a bit...

The body used won't have any bearing on the volume of the AF motor.

Listen to the first video and tell me that again . T4i is practically silent because of the constant focus ability.
