I suppose it could be because the mics on the T4i are located on top of the VF prism, whereas the 5DIII's mic is on the front of the body, much closer to the lens itself. If that's the case, then the noise level emitted by the 40 is probably the same on either body.

Either that or volume gain wasn't normalized between the bodies.

That makes sense. I have seen 1-2 others with a 60D that were quite quiet
