I understand this is a Canon forum.

I cannot afford the Canon 1.2L new or used. The 1.4 is affordable.

Any other lens brand, about 50mm, around 1.4, great IQ and sharpness, who wins?

My best lenses stop at 2.8 and I want something that will work better in low light. I can't afford anything made at 1.2, and most all 1.4 lens prices are MUCH better. General purpose use.

Canon 7D
Currently I have...
Canon 10-22
Canon 24-70L 2.8
Canon 100L macro IS 2.8

I am not set in stone on a 50mm.

if budget-minded go Canon, if you like more pleasing out of focus areas, go Sigma. If you get a great copy of the Sigma, it will be worth it.

Sigma, as everyone said, if you have a good copy. There's just something about how pictures come out with that lens that makes it very very good to use.

HOWEVER, why not look at the 30mm f1.4 from Sigma as well? That is closer to the perceived 50mm. Some people don't like how long 50mm feels on a smaller sensor as compared to full frame sensors.

It may be worth a moment to consider the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens. (external link) One of those units generated these images.

It may surprise some users of this forum to see examples of useful images from this lightweight and inexpensive lens, especially since it's so fashionable to complain about the lens because it's not expensive or heavy. Yet, there's a good chance that examples such as these show that the Canon 50mm f/1.8 can actually be useful, even when the subjects in front of the lens are moving or when the lens is paired with an equally lightweight and inexpensive camera such as the Canon T2i, as shown above.

Also, one of the great mysteries of photography is why some people can get useful results from equipment while others have trouble.

i'd look at a flash if you don't have one already...the sigma 30mm f1.4 is a good lens, being a little wider than the 50mm...figure out what lengths work for you with your zooms...set it at 30mm, 50mm, 85mm...

This lens will be for natural light situations.

I have been toying with that today. 50mm seems a little tight indoors a house, 28-35 seems more usuable. 50mm works outdoors.

At 50mm f/1.4 does anything beat the Canon for IQ?

What wins top honors at 28-35mm f/1.4?

Let me tell you that I loved my Canon 50 1.4 for it's image quality, low light performance, and very good autofocus.....however, I would never recommend the lens to anyone using a crop sensor. The focal length, which is equivalent to about 80mm, is very awkward to use indoors or when out with friends. Something in the 24 to 35mm range was much much more useful for me, personally.

If you can get a good copy of the Sigma 30 f/1.4, that is the way to go. I tried my luck and had 3 bad copies that had terrible auto focus. Which lead me to the Canon 28mm, which I have been very happy with thus far. I couldn't justify the cost, size, weight increase of getting the 24L or 35L

The sigma 30 1.4 is a better buy than the canon 28 1.8 for crop IMO.

The siggy is sharper, has smoother bokeh, and is 1.4 vs 1.8.

The canon however, can focus a bit closer, and has slightly faster AF.
