I understand this is a Canon forum.
I cannot afford the Canon 1.2L new or used. The 1.4 is affordable.
Any other lens brand, about 50mm, around 1.4, great IQ and sharpness, who wins?

Aug 26, 2012 11:15 | #3 My best lenses stop at 2.8 and I want something that will work better in low light. I can't afford anything made at 1.2, and most all 1.4 lens prices are MUCH better. General purpose use. .

There's just something about how pictures come out with that lens that makes it very very good to use. [Canon 5DII/30D | 24-70 f2.8L | Σ 30 f1.4 | Σ 50 f1.4 | 70-200 f4L | 580EX II ]

Yet, there's a good chance that examples such as these show that the Canon 50mm f/1.8 can actually be useful, even when the subjects in front of the lens are moving or when the lens is paired with an equally lightweight and inexpensive camera such as the Canon T2i, as shown above. Also, one of the great mysteries of photography is why some people can get useful results from equipment while others have trouble.

DreDaze wrote in post #14909154 ...the sigma 30mm f1.4 is a good lens, being a little wider than the 50mm...figure out what lengths work for you with your zooms...set it at 30mm, 50mm, 85mm... I have been toying with that today. 50mm seems a little tight indoors a house, 28-35 seems more usuable. 50mm works outdoors. .

Aug 26, 2012 20:07 | #10 Let me tell you that I loved my Canon 50 1.4 for it's image quality, low light performance, and very good autofocus.....however, I would never recommend the lens to anyone using a crop sensor. The focal length, which is equivalent to about 80mm, is very awkward to use indoors or when out with friends. Something in the 24 to 35mm range was much much more useful for me, personally.
