So I got me a 5D2, unboxed it and took it to Europe for a month...impressions.

As some of you may know, I used to have a 1D Mark III, which I loved, but realized that it's not the right machine for me, since I mostly shoot landscapes, cityscapes and other travel stuff. So, just to see how I liked the smaller body format and the FF format, I bought a 5Dc, fell in love with it and sold the 1D3.

However, the 5Dc - amazing as it may be - was missing a few things...namely video, a more modern UI, a better LCD, LiveView, etc. So I picked up a 5D2, which, for reasons relating to Korea's import laws, I only got when I met my buddies for a Euro trip last month.

I've spent the last month wandering around 8 countries in Europe, and shot nearly 5,000 pictures. I'm in the process of downloading all my pics right now, but from using the camera and looking at the results on the LCD I have to say it's an amazing piece of equipment.

The 3 Custom settings are infinitely useful (I could easily switch between high ISO/fast SS and long SS/low ISO shots for night shots, for example), the LCD is brilliant, the controls are flawless, the high ISO noise is incredible (I was happy with everything up to and including 6,400, and even H1 was a good "emergency" setting). Focusing was NEVER a problem on the centre spot, even when there was ridiculously little light in places like 1,000 year old churches. The edge focus points were more problematic, but even they were perfectly useful in 99% of the situations.

The battery life was incredible - with my spare battery I never ran out of juice, even when I shot a ton of stills/videos and used LV liberally.

I'll start posting pics on my Flickr and some on here as I go through editing them, but in the meantime I wanted to share my first experiences with this camera...I absolutely love it...it's probably the best-fitting camera for my purposes I've ever used!

Of 5000 shots how many are taken with each lens. Since am planning to upgrade to 5D2 for precisely this kind of usage. I am wondering to what other lens i will need to supplement my 24-70.

I've had a 7D for a couple of years. I just picked up a 5DMII a couple of weeks ago and I love it. I'll be keeping the 7D, but I think the 5D will be my main camera...

I can't believe you were away for a month and only took 5000 photos. At an airshow weekend I can rack up between 2 and 3 thousand easily. I only had my 5D2 for around 4 months during the winter so it didn't get too much use before I sold it and a 7d to get a 5D3. I'm sure though, you'll have loads of great photos which will bring back many happy memories.

I've been coveting a 5D2 since I got into photography 6 years ago. I have been shooting XTi for the last 5 years, 60D for the past 3-4 months and decided to treat myself to the 5D2. I received it today and I'm actually pretty disappointed... I can't seem to get tack sharp shots out of it, the AWB sucks and high iso pics are a LOT more grainy than I expected! =(

I'm hoping I just haven't figured out how to fully use it yet, but as of yet, I'm very disappointed and sad.

100% of the shots I have taken with the 5D2 were with the 16-35L II haha...I only took one lens with me :)

Thanks so much, I really appreciate your comment!! :) I agree...with the 5D2 I have absolutely no desire to jump to the 5D3 anytime soon...or ever!

Can't blame you...I used to have multiple cameras for years...now I just have the one...the perfect one for me.

Taking pictures of airplanes and buildings is different...when I was shooting news/sports/weddings I'd rattle off a lot more pictures too...5,000 shots is plenty for this trip. And yeah, I'm going through and processing them now, can't wait to print some of them and be reminded constantly of the awesome trip!

I agree, I think at 100%, the 5Dc was sharper...but, considering the 5D2 only has to be blown up to about 60% to give you the same size, I think it's sharper at equivalent sizes...I'm not worried about it, the shots still look great...gonna print some soon!

Also...the camera and I are going to China in 5 days!!!
