I found a good deal on a local 300mm f4 IS,have not had a look at it yet,but its date code is UN0302 which indicates its 13 years old.We have agreed to a price of $800 which I think is fair considering the age,but is there anything specifically I should be looking for in this lens? Are the current ones any different? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!!

You agreed on price before seeing it?

Yes,if he was asking $1000 I wouldn't bother driving out to look at it,seems quite normal to me to negotiate a price, then make the effort to make sure the lens checks out.Anyway,I am hoping to get some helpful information in the next 4 hours before I view the lens.

$800 is a fairly good price.
take a look at it first or request for pics first then lower the price if it's in poor condition

Take some pictures and view them on your laptop if possible. See if the IS is working and the glass is good.

Yes,I will bring a laptop and do all the normal testing, just curious if there were any specific issues I should look for in this particular lens especially considering its 13 years old.I am up in Canada and prices are inflated here,on the new market with tax it goes for $1600,so this is a good price assuming there are no issues with it.

As long as the focus and IS motors are working, it's worth 800, regardless of age.

If you can, take a camera with you and shoot some samples. Some minor glass scratches or scuffing isn't a big deal on the front element, but I wouldn't accept anything major.

My 300mm f/4.0L IS 14 years old and works as good today as when I bought it all those years ago. If it's been looked after, there shouldn't be any problems. I have 24yr old 50mm f/1.8 MkI and that works fine as well. Age should be immaterial if, as I said, it's been looked after. $800 is a good price. Good luck!

I was wondering the same thing. I inquired in a sale and I was given a code UB12xx.. Which would either be 2013 (not) or 1987. Did they even have the 300 IS in 1987? The carry case looks newer so I'm not sure what to think.

That's what I have found as well. Not sure where the person found the letter number combo, but I sent a message back describing the location and code.
