Hi, I've been offered a faulty EOS 400D for £54, $63 which has the following fault: The AF mirror will not lock in place causing un even exposure. I asked a couple of shops about a repair and they said £200 $250. I've a friend who can take things apart and fix them. Is this likely to be a broken part or will it just require a fiddly or lengthy reassembly? I provisionally bought it so should I be trying to get out of the. Purchase? Any help appreciated.

I have seen perfectly working 400D/Rebel XTI going for 200 bucks so I really don't think it's worth the trouble

If you've already committed to buying it then this may help - turns out a few parts are avail, see below. (Anything with "NS" means it's not-stocked as a individual part though)

I've a friend who can take things apart and fix them.

What constitutes "things". I was an auto mechanic 50 years ago and a mechanical engineer designing and supervising complex procedures on large machinery the last 46 years. I probably would not attempt to repair a camera unless I just did the disassembly out of curiosity.
