40D -> 600D?

Hi - I currently have the EOS 40D, which is doing exactly what it has done over the last 3-4 years beautifully.

However, technology has moved on a bit, so am considering a change.

The reasons I want to change are:
to get the extra 8mp higher resolution to crop in,
the higher max ISO to do better low light work,
inbuilt wireless flash
and have a go at HD DSLR video.

The 40D can do a fantastic burst frame speed, but I mostly do Portraits and landscapes so actually don’t use the speed.

With the fully loaded battery grip, I actually find the 40D a bit heavy going and don’t fit the grip for landscape work, so would actually prefer a lighter camera.

I’ve noticed that 600D (T3i) prices are dropping dramatically now the 650D is out – would a xxD user be happy with a 600D instead or would I miss the superior build, controls and pentaprism of the xxD series, and if not would the 600D be a good move from a 40D?

All advice gratefully received.

Kind Regards
Malc

The 60D retains many of the features you're used to but with a lighter build. I think anything less than the 60D would feel like a downgrade in terms of handling.

Personally, I think you'd miss the ergonomics and controls the most; and any camera that you don't like to use, doesn't GET used.

If you have the option, I'd go spend a few bucks to rent one of those from somewhere like LensRentals.com for a few days and shoot with it. If you don't miss the controls, maybe that would be a good move for you.

check out the ergonomics at a store but if you do portraits and landscapes an older XXX model could be a good choice

I'm sure the 600D is more than capable of taking the sort of photos you're describing perfectly well but, personally I'd prefer the ergonomics of the xxD body. I started with a 550D and after upgrading to a 7D and 5D2 I found it a PITA to go back to the buttons on the back. I shoot with a 5D3 and 60D now, while the wife has a 650D that I borrow occasionally and it's the same thing again.
