All were shot with a 70-200 f4L, sometimes with a Quantaray 2x Tele converter, sometimes without, which means a fairly significant amount of manual focus shooting at what I figure is at best f/8.

No idea on the species of the birds, not sure how much of the bird route I want to pursue photographically, I know my midday timing was supposed to be about as bad as it gets, but CC is certainly welcome as I will probably play with it a little more, at least as long as the weather is nice enough to sit outside on the porch or I catch something out of the corner of my eye while hiking and shooting landscapes.

#2 looks like a killdeer or something
#3 a sandpiper or yellow legs
#5 Great Blue heron perhaps?
#7 looks like Geese.

cool stuff.
especially with a 200mm f4 or 400 f8

it's a very nice start, you definitely have an eye for composition. I think Jeremy IDs were correct. To do manual focusing on birds while in flight is definitely an asset. Give it a few more tries and I'd love to see your next pictures :)

... does it really matter?i see with my eyes, i shoot with my fingers.

These are a very good start, I'd say, and you have a good eye for composition. Manually focusing as well, impressive, given the subjects. I'd stick with this, I think you may have a flair for it based on these being your first.

I too am looking forward to further photos from yourself but, if I had to offer up anything that may be of help, try sometimes getting lower for subjects either on the ground or just above it (or just above water) as often this lower prespective can really make a shot and whilst it may not suit on all occasions thinking about your perspective when framing up a shot never hurts.

Looking forward to seeing more - keep at it. :D

It appears that the flock of birds in your first shot is for sure sparrows, exactly what kind, I don't know. (I went and looked online)
The bird in #4 is maybe a Gadwall, Mallard hen, or a Mottled duck, I can't tell.

You mention that you aren't sure yet about birds for photography yet, that is something that either grabs you, or doesn't, I think. Either you like it, or you don't, at least, usually. :D
Maybe it all depends on what you already have going in photography, and if you have plenty going on, maybe birds is not something for you, yet, maybe it'll come later, or, never. All I know is, I read about how it grabs a person and you can't stop taking bird shots, and it happened that way with me too.
The thing about birds is that it's not 'just' about shooting them, but you can also have a species that is hard to find/shoot, or find your nemesis, do portraits, (birds) or flying, (BiF) or search out eagles, etc. There's always something that can be exciting about it, but, I also realize that it's not for everyone, I know after all of this time, my wife is not one to jump up and down about any of that, or cameras. heheh
Personally, I don't shoot sports, cars, people portraits, street, or any of that, I would, but it is not something that is for me, yet, I have my hands full most of the time with birds in some way or another. (I do love landscapes and insect macro though!)

So hopefully you'll know what you feel soon, because looking at your shots I can definitely see more than just 'promise', even though the shots are kind of small, they appear to have a lot going for them.

To me, you did really well in these, ALL of them. :)

Randy
