Nope, it's only a year old, and still in production. It doesn't have to be only on the body... Other things could be included.

I wonder if the video editors on The Titanic ever went, "Sorry, I can't right now. I'm busy synching the Titanic..."

No. It is used with almost all newer camera bodies. Most consider it a necessity. I almost guarantee that you have at least one.

No. Still close-ish, but not memory related. I can't say much more.

None so far; remember that it can be on accessories such as flashes, lenses, etc. This is truly an extreme macro, but any farther back, and a preschooler would have been able to get it. It is not truly necessary, but most (Including myself) believe that the service which this part provides is an amazing assistance to photographers.

It looks a little dusty to be a contact for anything really... Is it the edge of an SD card?

Shampoo sounds like an unfortunate name for a hair product.
You're a ghost driving a meat-coated skeleton made from stardust, riding a rock, hurtling through space. Fear Nothing!

So far, we know that it is metal, tiny, photography related, and is a vital (to most) part of the imaging process. It is a contact.

It is not on the main camera body, and it is in no way related to media (CF SDHC, or cables) and it isn't batteries.
It attaches to the body. The object it is on is always absolutely necessary to take a photo, but this part is not always needed.

This is an extreme macro, so it is a bit harder.

Another view: and if it isn't gotten soon, I'll try to help out more. Perhaps I went a bit overboard with the macro.
