for my eyes with focus confirmation beep ... no it isn't enough.

wow Mike can you please expand on that further?

Is it because say you are taking a half body portrait, the actual focus area (eye) is too small that it really isn't accurate even with the focus confirm?? I thought focus confirm beep should be accurate enough??

VF + focus beep should be good enough for close up macro stuff such as food shots right?

If liveview is absolutely needed for this lens, I'll have to pass :(

I'm a owner of the zeiss and I think it's one of the best lenses maid tot bring on a holiday or if you have the time to properly shoot.
But when I'm photographing weddings I need the AF, so I'll own both in the future.

Thing is I don't mind MF at all. But if MF = liveview 10x, then I'll have to pass.

What is your experience on this? Is viewfinder + focus beep accurate?

yes, for people at more than 1 meter away, my hit rate is squat.

if i was doing a baby shot/head shot, my hit rate is a bit better though

for food, macro items, i don't even use live view, as you can see the DOF shift in the VF

Thanks Mike. Fair enough. So what you are basically saying is it's really no better/worse than saying MFing with my Sigmalux? I think I should test it when I get home and see how hard/easy myself.

Cheers.

It is very discouraging that the AF confirmation beep is not enough. Personally, I hardly ever use live view.

Get the eg-s focus screen. Not super accurate, but a whole lot more than the regular vf

I had the same problem deciding last november..... but that changed when Amazon had a gold coin sale and I snagged a new Canon 50L for $1143 :)

Made my decision a little easier... I love the 50L

Thanks for all the replies. I found a great deal on a used Zeiss 50 MP for $900 in excellent condition and will be picking it up in 2 days. I figured at that price I have nothing much to lose...

Will report back once I acquire the lens :)

interesting about how you use you 35 and 50.
I would like to say, keep the AF lens of the focal length which you utilize to capture vivid targets..
Say, if actually you don't too much af of 35L, why not try Zeiss 35 1.4? You don't lose stops, and 35 1.4 is considered to be one of the most outstanding Zeiss lenses.
Same for 100 f/2

Good luck!

tbh I prefer 50mm on ff than 35mm....as I often find 35mm too wide. My 35L has been gathering dust

I might sell it eventually and get the 24L for the unique perspective.

Not too sure about the Zeiss 35, but I heard nothing but great things about the 50 MP, so I have to try it myself.;)

Not interested in the 100 MP for now as I have the 100L macro.

There still doesn't seem to be consensus as to whether VF + confirmation beep is sufficient for tack sharp images...Very mixed results and unfortunately, I can't see myself using live view + magnification for every shot.

So basically...
If I choose the Canon 50L f/1.2: I risk soft images wide open
If I choose the Zeiss 50 f/2 MP: I risk not being able to focus

Guess it's a good thing I jumped on the Sigma deal a couple days ago. I'll see if the Sigmalux satisfies what I need @ less than 1/3rd the price of the other 2.
