As a bit more information, the focusing system is set to present the focus screen at about 1 meter from your eye. So you should normally wear the eye correction you need to see sharply at one meter.

At 1 metre, I can see quite clearly with or without my glasses (I am only mildly short sighted). This probably explains why I found that the diopter in the viewfinder made little difference (or, to put it another way, there was very little difference between the diopter settings and I eventually just left it at the centre). I'll try your 'fast scroll' diopter adjustment method, though, and see if that makes a difference.
