Was never happy with my Sigma 50/1.4 it was never that sharp and was never very accurate when autofocussing and then... the front element just fell out.....
Sent it to Sigma who gave me first class service and received it back today.
Result? Well it seems pretty much perfect and it seems to focussing as accurately as I can manually with live view at x10. Its dead sharp too. Am happy bunny. Results can be seen on my flickr page ( see my signature)

Probably had some play in the front element's mount that was causing your focus and sharpness issues. Repairing that would have made everything solid and consistent...
