I have a EF 28-90mm 4-5.6 that I want to sell but I want to make sure the description is accurate before I sell it. How do you tell if its the usm model? It doesnt say anywhere on the lens that it is so I pressumed it isn't but I'd like to know for sure.

That isn't my actual lens but its the same model as the one in the picture, at least the rubber pattern is the same as that one.

Most of the time, although this does not apply to the new EF-S lenses, if it is USM it has a gold ring around the end (and will usually clearly say somewhere on the lens that it is Ultrasonic), if it is not USM it will have a silver ring (or no ring at all), as the one in the image does.

If you lens is like the one in the picture, with a silver ring, I would say it does not have USM.

Same comment as above. USM lenses usually have the gold band (where the white band is on yours) and also say Ultrasonic Motor right on the lens.

A quick peek into the Canon Museum shows a bunch of different models 28-90, 28-90usm, 28-90II, 28-90IIusm and more. From what I could tell, all have a silver ring.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

That lens, in USM (I have one) says USM in red on the lens surround. If it's not there, easy call.

The 28-90mm USM has a a Siver ring, but it says "Ultrasonic" in gold next to the focal length numbers, and "USM" in red on the front..

The EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 II USM was slightly different.

Mike, you seem to always be able to provide definitive answers to lens questions.

Thanks... I have been using EOS cameras since 1989 and have always been interested in Canon gear.

Your lens might be here...http://www.the-digital-picture.com …6-II-USM-Lens-Review.aspx (external link).

Note the description "Although it sports "USM" (Ultrasonic Motor) in its moniker, the Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 II USM Lens utilizes the lesser Micro-USM - not Canon's superb Ring-USM."

Note as well the comment "It is very cheap - in cost, in build quality and in optical results."

Just hang on to it...use it on rainy days.
