Hello, I am relativeely new to the forum :)

I have just purchased a canon 5D Mark ii. I am yet to buy lenses as I don't really know what I'm looking at. I will be doing mainly portrait/everyday photography and some landscape as I plan to travel.

These two photographs caught my eye and I'm wondering if anyone could tell me the type or model of lens that would have been used for either of them and the editing type that is used on one with the man crossing the street as I find those kind of black/white colous very appealing. Thankyou :)

First of all, forums rules are that you can't directly post other people's photos unless you link to them, like directly to the website.

And welcome to the forum. You bought just a 5D2 body with no lenses? In that case, you might want to look into something that can be used for general use, like a 24-70 f/2.8 or 24-105 f/4 IS; from there you can better determine what you need.

If you find yourself lacking reach, a 70-200 zoom is almost essential to any photographer, and a fast prime like a 50mm 1.4 or 85mm 1.8 is needed to round out your low-light shooting. If you find yourself often shooting wide, you may instead opt for something like a 35mm or 24mm prime. There is no right lens for any given subject, just what your imagination allows you to think up, no reason you can't bring a 200mm along to shoot landscapes and photogs regularly shoot people with 35mm's.

As far as B&W goes, that depends on your post-processing skills, be it in Photoshop or something else. If you shoot all your photos in RAW, you'll always have plenty of information from which to craft any kind of "look" that you want afterwards, but I'll say this right now - you won't get it just by running the saturation down or something else like that. Also, don't limit yourself just to global adjustments, it's a common mistake to think that you can increase the clarity and definition of a photo just by playing with levels and curves... well, you can to some degree, but never like getting in and using layers and brushing in just the amount of effect you want on the parts that really need it, not the whole image.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

Welcome to POTN, you selected a very good camera.

I'd suggest you download a plugin for your browser that will display EXIF data, it's not in every image posted here on POTN - but it is in a lot of them. When you want to know the lens/camera/etc for an image you find interesting simply right click and activate your EXIF plugin.

That first photo is likely to be shot with a wide angle...note the considerable difference in size between the gentleman crossing the street and the folks on the sidewalk, and even the woman a few steps away from him!

The second photo is likely shot with a medium or long telephoto, as little area in the background is visble

An alternate technique to get information on a pictures, which may be more effective than asking questions on a photographic forum, would be to go to the web site where the images appear to have originated (external link)and ask someone there. There's always a good chance that the people who actually took the pictures may know.

It might help if you told us your budget and how many lenses you are ultimately comfortable buying. If you only ever plan to buy one lens and leave it on your camera and you don't want to spend more than $1,000--- that is a little different than if you're planning to buy a couple and cost is less of a factor.

If you want to do both portrait and landscape you're really probably going to need a couple lens if you want to get the best lenses for those situations.
