Hello, big newb here. So I've learned how to do long exposure as well as timelapse. Now I'm trying to combine the two. My question is.....on a a intravolmeter, can you tell it to keep the shutter open a certain amount of time in addition to telling it how often to take pics? I mean, on most inexpensive intravolmeters that is?

If not, does that mean those long exposure timelapses were done manually?

Thanks

The length of the exposure would be a camera setting, the frequency would be a intravalometer setting. If you want long exosures and still have auto exposure you would need the camera set to TV mode and select the shutter speed you want.

I'm a little confused, why do auto exposure? I thought I would I want it set to manual so that I can do bulb mode so the shutter can stay open to receive more light.

The Canon Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3 (external link) does exactly what you want. In addition to being a simple cable release, it has several modes:
+ Time Exposure (allows very long times)
+ Time Lapse (you can choose the interval)
+ Self timer (Take the picture after some specified delay)
+ Combination of the 3 above, e.g., after a delay of 2 hours, take a time exposure for 45 seconds every 30 minutes.

I guess I'm confused about what you want to achieve. What are you shooting? Does the light stay consistent? Do the length of your exposures exceed what you can program in M mode and result in you needing to go bulb?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I'm trying to do night timelapses.

@hairy_moth, thanks! I'm guessing the $13 intravolmeter I ordered off Amazon doesn't have those functions. Dang, guess I have to do this manually until I can afford that one.

I did the same thing. I purchased a very inexpensive remote until I saved for this one. I love it. The only problem with it is that it is non intuitive.. I had to read the manual before using it for anything other than a simple release. :) But once you understand the controls, it is great!

There was also one other perk (I think it resulted from this, not the camera), the exposure time appears in the EXIF. I recently did some time exposures for 45 seconds (the camera only supports up to 30 seconds or bulb). I was surprised when I noticed that the EXIF showd a 45 second exposure rather than just 'bulb.' (I am pretty sure when I used an simple cable release on bulb and a stopwatch, I did not see the time in the EXIF.)

I probably does.

If it's anything like the ones I've owned there will be 4 variables -

Delay: This is the time the camera will wait before it takes the first shot.
Long: This is the length of the exposure.
Interval: This is the time between shots.
N: The number of shots to be taken.

So with

Delay = 00:00':10"
Long = 00:00':30"
Intvl = 00:01:00"
N = 3

You set your camera with the desired aperture and Bulb ('B') mode. Press the timer Start/Stop and the camera will wait 10 seconds, take a 30s exposure, wait 1 minute, take another 30s exposure, wait one minute, take a final 30s exposure.
