Sorry... I know this question has probably been asked.. but I barely have a grip on flash use, so I need to ask in 'my terms' :)

I can get a 430ex for 190$. Not the best price, but not bad either as far as I can tell.

Is there any reason I should instead get the version2? Or for that matter, should I avoid used, and buy new?

It appears to me that the version2 is an improvement, but nothing that I'll really wish I had.

I think the II has manual control, the I only has ETTL, but I could be wrong since I've never owned either. Manual is necessary for off camera flash.

I think for more like 210ish, I could have the newer version. I might hold out.

The 430EXII... more power, faster recycle time between shots, metal foot, better quick release from hot shoe. More compatible with radio triggers

By the way... can I manually, MANUALLY trigger the flash? (like hold it by my side during a 30sec exposure and trigger by hand?)

Sure... just press the pilot button once it's illuminated (red).

I use manual exposure settings on the copy machine

This is not true. They both have manual and eTTL modes.

Oh ok, maybe I'm thinking of the old 420EX. I've only ever owned 5xx series flashes.

You are thinking about the 420ex. It does not have manual mode.

Since you have a T4i I would suggest getting the 430EX II because it supports the in-camera flash menu. (the older 430EX is not compatible with the in-camera flash menu)

If that isn't enough, here are a few more reasons:

1) Metal Hotshoe
2) Quick release mechanism
3) Silent recycle
4) Faster recycle
5) Nine Custom Functions (vs 6 on 430EX)

The 430EX in manual mode is settable in one stop increments and the II in one-third stop increments. Also, with the newer cameras (40D and beyond), the II model is completely controllable from the flash control menu of the camera.

I just picked up a 430 exII from the canon refurbished store for $203.00. They did have a %15 sale on with free shipping. It looks brand new. Unfortunately the sale is over but I think they do this several times a year.
