When I use a wide focal, the image in the viewfinder is not sharp, and if I manually focus I can see a sharp image, but the focus confirmation never pops, and of course the shot is OOF, and with a long focal, everything is very sharp and clear.

I have been adjusting the diopter without the lens so the focus points are clear and sharp, I see them clear without the lens, but once the lens is mounted, it's not sharp.

Also don't remember since when or of this is normal but when I select the top focus point I see, it's reflected. Something like this.

I have a vague idea that when my 60D went for repair and it came back it wasn't glowing like this. But I'm not 100% sure.

however I open the compartment where the focus screen is hold like if I was going to change it, and that glow is gone.. So what do you think ??

Don't know as I never used a 60D before. What you can do is take out your focusing screen and re-seat it back in and see if that fixes the problem your getting.

Take Care,

Carefull doing that though, i screwed mine up just by simply touching the focusing screen, had to send it to a camera repair shop.

You should never touch the focusing screen. On the models with replacement screens they send a tool which is used to manipulate the screen. The oils on your skin can screw them up.

I already take it out completely and re-seat and the glow/halo is still there. So before jumping to buy a new focus screen I want to make sure that mine could be wrong or if its normal..

funny that today somebody bump this old thread https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1156111 (didn't find it when I did the search wrong terms i guess)

You mean that oval thing above the top focus point is not on the wall? Does it show up in the photo or can you only see it when looking through the viewfinder?

Yeah that oval thing (I mask it over the picture to show the effect that I'm seen) it is not on the wall, is a glow/halo that appear only when I select the top focus point. when the camera is pointing to something light (ex sky) it's not very apparent, but when the camera is pointing something dark is very visible. It doesn''t appear on the pictures.

However I did some more test.. For example this pic

IMAGE: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8320/7901984750_5d7fb08537_o.jpg

AF is ON, Pointing exactly where it's on focus, so the camera is spot on. but on the viewfinder what I see in focus where I put the blue rectangle... So I'm starting to believe that my focus screen is out of whack because the viewfinder is showing me around 5 inches behind the true focus plane, it's strange..

I also have a D90 and with that camera where I put the AF point the camera nails the focus and the viewfinder is showing exactly the same zone as the picture.

EDIT: Forget to mention, when manually focusing I can see how the focus plane change on every part of the viewfinder, but it's never spot on.. and the AF confirmation never pops.. So to make this short. The Focus confirmation is always in front from what I see in focus on the viewfinder.

Well I guess you have a few things you can do. First is to send it in to a Canon service center and have them fix it. Second you can buy a new focusing screen and install it, hoping that will fix the problem or clean your focusing screen and see if that changes anything. You really have nothing to loose if you mess up the existing focusing screen trying to clean it.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

The problem is that sending it to Canon will be a flat rate of $200, last month was with them to fix another damn problem, but anyway I have read also that there are some shims that helps the focus screen stay in place, would affect manual focus. https://photography-on-the.net …php?p=8765839&postcount=6

So guess that's the problem I'm having, but I don't know if the ones with replaceable screens also have those shims. I see one on the 60D but it's exactly bellow the prism and this one doesn't drop with focus screen

If the 60d is similar to the t3i the focus screen will only light up correctly when properly aligned. I am not aware of it changing the focus point though. For mine when I tried to clean it my greasy hand accidentally touched the top element and diffused the focus points. I replaced it myself with tweezers and its been good since then. Focus point never changed or anything though as it is supposed to sit flush and snug in there. If yours it not snug I suppose its possible it could affect focus but I am not positive on how much versus your description.

I think are similar.. But I can't figure out how to properly align it.. because on this one the shim or the adjustment washer as Canon call them, doesn't drop off. It seems that is held by the superimposed display..

I have been searching all day and found that other 60D user have the same "feature" what it leads me to think that this behavior is normal.

What I notice when the focus screen was out of the camera, is how poor are the rear cuts, they look if they where made with the teeth. What a shame on Canon !!
