Update:

I'm pleasantly surprised at the IQ of the 28-105 II even at 105mm f/4.5. Judging by the reviews, I expected less, lol. I think I'm going to enjoy this lens as my official "beater".

As long as you are completely happy with it bw! I always like being pleasantly suprised when I get something more than I was expecting. How's that 40mm?

I think for the applications I have in mind for the 28-105 II it'll be a fun lens. Applications include: street photography, some newspaper work and for traveling light along with the pancake.

And speaking of the 40mm, it is exactly what I'm looking for in a lens of this nature. Essentially, it makes my ungripped 5Dc look like a fancy P&S, which is what I'm after. AF is a little slow for my tastes, but I think it will work fine in the same way my ef 50/1.4 is a little slow but gets the job done. IQ is very nice. Manual AF is doable. And regarding subjects, it's more likely to get an "Awww, that's cute!" than an "Is that thing going to zoom in on my pores?" like a larger lens would.

I've had the 28-105 II was made in Japan, and did not have the yellow flower by the distance window. The units with the yellow flower were the 5 bladed aperture, whereas the lenses which actually said Macro were a 7 bladed aperture. The 7 bladed was generally prefered over the 5 bladed.

Mine is still kicking to this day, although I am beginning to see the down side of barrel wear- dust.

Nothing I cannot work around, but it is something to be aware of.

I love the lens to this day.

The 40mm is just a little gem. It's a great lens I will take with me everywhere. I hated how the 50mm f/1.4 didn't get sharp until around f/2.2 or so. I hated it so much I just gave it to a friend of mine. The 40mm is sharp even wide open. Only thing I don't like is the MF, I wish it was full time and had some feed back in the focus ring.

In case you're not aware (if you are, please disregard), the 40 does has full time MF with the caveat that the camera must be active. I actually like MFing with this lens. Used it in a shoot today and it was having a hard time locking focus in good light with the outer points of my 5Dc. It could be the 5Dc, so I'll have to put it on my 1DmkIII to see how it does in different lighting.

Overall I'm happy with the 40, though one must be careful about distortion at the frame edges.

ftm will only work if the shutter is half pressed (or the * button if you have it set to AF). The body has to be "on" for the lens to MF - not just turned on, but the lcd screens must be lit.
