So did you get your email from smug mug about the recent price increase?

I am not happy about the cost but I understand it and really like the ease of use for the site, I just wih the increase would have been a bit more gradual instead of double all at once.

The owner/founder has a blog, about 90% of it is replys to him and from people leaving thier accounts with smug mug. Ouch thats got to leave a mark!

Thanks for the heads up. I was considering just hosting my images myself but my smug account still had a few months before renewal. This increase and reduction in features will make me work harder leaving for sure.

I'm glad it's a long weekend because I'll have a little extra time to put something together.

Heres the blog..

Leave them a comment on their blog........ reminds me of netflicks! I dropped them after their increase, I think many will leave them, heck, they probably don't care!

Yeah...they are getting hammered pretty hard in the blog comments.

It is kinda crappy to to almost double prices at once. Glad I signed up with Zenfolio recently instead, it would have left a bad taste in my mouth.

I dropped a comment, as a business paying twice for the same features is ridiculous.

Also paying for someone's triduplicates 10fps baseball spree is also irksome. I've browsed alot of SM galleries who have 1000 photos for an event, with 10fps sprees and no culling whatsoever.

Considering switching to their portfolio set-up and work around them a little more on my part. I can keep coupons and all that jazz by just doing the ordering myself.

I'm sure they get cuts of the prints that are ordered from their site. Not sure what the problem is.

A couple weeks ago, I reluctantly decided to move my online galleries from SmugMug to Photoshelter because of the nice WordPress integration, the built-in Aperture uploader, the better SEO capability, the unintrusive look of the basic themes, and various other features that simplified my day.

I really liked SmugMug and the wonderful community there, and I was feeling kind of sad about my decision to leave. Then about a half hour ago I saw my email with the notice of the (outrageous) price increase. Guess what? Not feeling sad anymore. My subscription expires in a couple weeks, and it will now be with some element of delight that I go delete all my galleries and images from my account.

Good for you. I've had my finger on the button several times. Just so I got this, the pricing goes into effect October 15th? my account renews in February, but I take it that does not matter. I'll tell ya, what a mistake on their part.

Their FB page is pretty active as well..

In the past 30-days I had just uploaded, key-worded and described over 100 images...and I cancelled them just as quickly!

Was it easy? Hell, no!

As I told SM in their feedback - "They no longer offer VALUE'

I guess it isn't for everyone. I've been with Smugmug for a long time and they are hosting hundreds of thousands of images for me. I sell a lot of prints there, and love how easily I can share and sell.

I'm grandfathered at $200/year for their pro level. I have over a TB stored on Smugmug. 1TB stored on Amazon cloud would be $500/year. Don't know what they would charge for 1.5TB.

Smugmug is still an incredibly great value despite doubling in price. I'm happy to pay it, especially since they are reinvesting it in the site.

I am torn. I am a fan of smugmug but it is really hard to justify what that site costs me in subscriptions and commissions. I do not believe I will be renewing. That is a heck of a price increase.
They know they are going to loose a lot of clients but they can loose almost half and not see a difference in their income.
I am going to be checking out alternatives.
I will say it is a good time for their competition to throw out some coupons.
