I recently purchased a Canon 300mm f4 IS,and was hoping I could get some good moon pics with my 7d and 2x and 1.4x tc.I first tried stacking them(tc's)without much success.I am using live mode with manual focus as well as a tripod.Finding it difficult getting the focus just right. Here is the best I could come up with(using 2x tc and 300mm f4 is).Not really thrilled with the results,is this the limits of my equipment,or is there room for improvement,if so any tips??

Not being mean, but nothing special about it.
But then again, how exciting can moon pics be?

focus might be off, and you might be losing quality with that extender. This is with the 7d and 70-200 with no extender, just cropped.

I think shooting a full moon creates less texture as well

as gen2roller said. you'll get better detailed shots when moon is not full.

Good advice as to not shooting a full moon. I use a 300 mm ISL 2.8 with both teleconverters stacked with the understanding that AF may not lock on and manually focusing is a PITA due to the "throw" of the focusing ring.
Also, there does appear to be some quality control inconsistences with that lens... http://www.photozone.de …st-report--review?start=2 (external link)

THis was shot with a Canon 60D and a 70-200 sigma at the time. I couldn't tell you the exact details but, fast shutter speed, low iso, F8.

What I mean by interesting is that by shooting the moon, especially full like this and your's, there is not much difference full moon to full moon.

In terms of tips.....Tripod, you don't really need one. Get out of Livemode and use your viewfinder. Autofocus, in the 7D have center point focusing, focus on the moon, it will be easy if there are no street lights, set iso 200, F,8 and adjust shutter speed accordingly for correct exposure of the moon. Its a simple shot. Crop in in photoshop or whatever you use.

I was skeptical of this, but went ahead and gave it a try, seemed to give me better results. Thanks!
