I've recently found myself in the market for a new camera...and by in the market, I mean my 60D broke a couple weeks ago and I NEED to replace it. At first I was just going to buy another 60D, but then I thought about upgrading. I've narrowed my choices down to a 60D or a 7D, but I'm having a hard time finalizing my decision. I guess I'd call myself a "professional hobbyist". I've made some money doing photos for people, but mostly I shoot for myself. On top of that, my friends and I shoot a lot of short films and stuff.
So those are my basic needs. I can do what I want with a 60D, but I also think I could benefit from spending a little more on a used 7D.
Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

In what way did the 60D "break"? If it's a build issue, then the choice is quite obvious.

Check out my post on the "stupidest thing you've done" thread. Not a build issue, more a "what in the hell were the chances of that happening?" type issue lol.

I think this is the key. What are you hoping to do with the 7D that you weren't happy with on the 60D? When you actually HAD the 60D were there any times you wished for something more/different. If no, this may be upgrading just for the sake of it.

If the 7D would have survived that fall, then I think you have your answer. Think of build quality as built-in insurance.

I'll second this. If you want more fps and an advanced AF system with the ability to create custom user settings and customize what the buttons do, then the 7D would be ideal. Otherwise, stick with the 60D.

If the 60D is repairable, you may want to look into that option. If not, then definitely take advantage of the Canon Loyalty Program. Through that, the 7D body will be around $1000.

Maybe the 7D would have survived the fall...I'm not sure. Maybe I should just buy one, recreate the accident, and make my decision based off that? (this was my mothers humorous suggestion while reading over my shoulder)

Part of me feels like I'd be upgrading just for the sake of it, but another part feels like maybe thats not a bad thing. So far I've gotten by fine with the 60D, but at some point in the future, that might not be the case. I could definitely see myself wanting the better AF system, more fps, etc...
I figure if there was ever a time to upgrade, maybe this is it?
My budget is $1000, so I can either buy a new 60D, or a used 7D. And I've been finding some pretty nice ones for sale on here. I'm definitely going to look into the loyalty program.
So should I spend my whole budget on a new camera, or 3/4ths of my budget and have a little extra money?

Going by the lenses listed in your sig, you probably really don't need the latest and greatest A/F ( well.. the 7D's isn't latest and greatest, but much better than previous bodies), or high burst fps. The exception being your 85/1.8, which is a fast focusing lens, usable for indoor sports. Anyways.. you might be better off with the 60D...a new body vs. used, and maybe you can throw the money saved towards something else. ;)
