I'm trying to figure out the best way to get a shot like this:

IMAGE: http://gregminuskin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/DSCN7510.jpg
Which happen to be a closeup of this:

I have a 60D with all the lenses listed below. Can anyone advise me on how I can achieve this please?

Find the filter thread diameter for the J.C penny 28mm lens and get a reversing ring and an adapter that will match the diameter of the j.c. penny thread. The reversed 28mm will easily give you the image above

So I guess the answer is to use a wide lens reversed. Guess I'll order an adapter :) Thanks!

Did a trial run holding the lens myself. Even with the 28 reversed, it isn't quite as close as I would like.

Any other ideas?

What main lens were you using with the 28?

Just the 28 reversed. Not attached to anything. Would bellows with a reversed lens be my best option?

Best would be to buy Kenko extension tubes, they are cheap and very effective. However you'd have to crop maybe 50% to get closer. You'd have to buy the amazing MP-E65 macro 1-5x lens, 2-3x would be more than enough but you'll need a steady tripod and good lighting

Yeah, I was looking at that MP-E65. Too expensive for occasional use. Sadly, 5x still isn't enough. I use a 20x loupe to examine the nibs when I'm working on them and that's not always close enough.

I'm also thinking about a microscope camera (a cheaper one). I wonder what my other options are.... Thanks for the help so far folks.

If you are wanting to get what the pictures that you posted, you may want to consider getting the camera that took them. The camera is a Nikon E990 (external link), it is a very old camera, 3.34 megs, which is not as high resolution by today's standards, but, it does take very good close-ups. I still have one, I bought mine in 1999.
You may not be able to find one exactly like it, but, more than likely, it's successors are very similar in the Macro area.
If that is something that interests you, there are always cameras like that on Craigslist or e-Bay, pretty cheap too.

Another way is to get Diopter lens that screw onto your existing lenses, I have gotten some very good results with those.

Hopefully that helps, it's way cheaper to do than buying an expensive lens.

EDIT:
This is not the exact camera as I mentioned, it is really, but the difference is that it has a plastic tripod screw hole, not a metal one like the 990...
(This is in Houston too)

The Coolpix name is also something that you would want to look under, the 990 is a Coolpix, it was the first one, now, there's a lot of them, they will 'probably' have the same 'stuff' that you'd need to get that macro shot you need.
Here's the Houston area Craigslist search under, "Coolpix"...

Randy,
Thank you so much!! I did take a look at the exif data and saw it was a E990 and didn't have much luck finding the exact camera. I'll look into the options you suggested!

If that is a route that you would want to try, here's another one that will take even almost as close in macro shots...
(Also in Houston)

This model takes a shot at 0.4." the Nikon 990 series does it at 0.8"...

I don't know much more on the Nikons, I haven't used mine for a long time, so all I'm doing here is copying and pasting the names of each camera in Google and searching...

For instance...

"NIKON CoolPix 5400 manual", I find the online .PDF and I look at the manual's Macro section for the macro ability.
(What you want in a search is a .PDF so you can actively search for "Macro", otherwise, I have found that it's kind of hard to find in their .PDF's.)

I hope that makes sense, if not, I don't mind helping out if you need any. :)

Randy
