I've been doing a lot of work on my photography. My goal is to be able to do some side work to supplement my habit and buy more equipment, starting (but not before) next year. I read and practice daily, and I am improving a lot. I understand the importance of finding a "niche" and something to specialize in...

In my course, I've notice that I found what I really like: nature and macro. At first I thought I'd enjoy sports...I've always done that with my other business, but found it boring and not really worth it.... financially or emotionally outside of photographing someone I have a relationship with.

On the other hand, I could sit for hours doing macro work on flowers and insects..I really look forward to it each and every day.

I've found I dont have the same drive when it comes to other stuff. Sure, I'd do it for a price, but I don't really look forward to it the same.... I have some interest in portraits, mainly outdoor, but havent had as much practice (much easier to photograph a bug than convince someone to stand around for hours while you practice)

With that said..how did you decide what you'd specialize in?
Did you fall into it?
Or is it what you really enjoy?
Or is it because it's where the $ is?

I feel a pull to really branch into portraits and such, as I just really dont see any $ in macro work and nature stuff....perhaps I'm wrong on that....seems like the $ would be more towards portraits/ weddings, etc. I bet selling nature prints is a tough sell....

Please offer your thoughts.

For me, it was taking what I was excited about and putting it into action...

For the most part I like music photography (but not limited to it) -- I can play a little piano, I like singing karaoke, but I also love concerts -- in a way idolize the 'rock star' -- take hints from them, that's what drives me to capture it as best as I can...

It has paid somewhat decently well, but I know that devoting my time / passion to it can result in greater art, because somewhere along the way, someone is going to be impressed with your work -- your dedication and passion will shine through, and the money will naturally follow.

I think it depends on why you are interested in photography in the first place. Is it to capture memories of your family and friends as best you can? To make beautiful prints of the landscape around you and wherever you might go? To show off your creative work that you worked so hard for?

For me. I have two goals. To show off my pictures (of my experiences) for my family and friends to enjoy (or not), and to take great pictures of them. For the former, it was about looking at a lot of pictures online and seeing which type of photography I enjoyed looking at and trying it myself. This turned out to be street. For the latter, I have just started out learning more about off camera flash, reflectors, strobist stuff. I have had two shoots with semi-pro/amateur models with photography groups via meetup.com (which has been a great way to experience different types of photography as well as meet and learn from people). During these meetups, I have found that whilst I can appreciate most forms of photography, I am not really motivated to go out and do landscapes, sports, macro, unless I was bored. As you say, it's about what makes you want to pick up the camera, time and time again.
