Hi, I am looking to add an ssd to my MBP running CS6.

The program and system files are around 60 gb and a 120gb disk would work just fine.

My qtn is :

Is it ok to just have the system files on the SSD and the images on the hard disk?
Or is it much better if the image file is also on the SSD?

I will have to decide the SSD capacity to buy based on this.

Image files can be on spinning disk, but put your cache on the SSD if you can. Image files on SSD is faster, but I don't know if it's enough to bother with.

How do you setup your cache on your SSD?
I'm also planning on upgrading my MBP with an SSD, but was wondering if it was worth transfering files onto my SSD for working on them and then (after I finished editing) move them to my HD. I didn't know you could put the cache on an SSD. Sounds good though!

Thanks everyone for the inputs. I could have managed with a 128gb disk I guess, but decided to invest for a little longer and got a 256gb ssd.

Waiting for the stuff eagerly. I can move my working directory also to the SSD with this space.

Cache space and settings are from inside the CS6 program preferences right?

This is probably a question for a mac forum - but I'm sure I'll get some good responses here...

a. My MBP is still on Snow Leopard. Is there a way to install Moutain Lion on the SSD and migrate all the other applications to the SSD?

b. Any difference between having the Boot SSD in the Optical Bay or is it better to load the Boot SSD in the HDD slot and move the hard disk to the optical bay?

c. If I have to reintall apps, how does one reinstall CS6 - does it make sense to deactivate and then reactivate?

b. There is suppose to be difference. I don't know how much there's truth in this, but it's all over Internet, that even though optical bay is suppose to be SATA3, it doesn't really work with SATA3 speed.
I just changed disks in my late2011 15" MBP, and I put ssd in hdd slot, while I moved old 750GB HDD to optical bay. Both drives are recognized as SATA3, but ssd connects at 6Gbps, while hdd in optibay connects at 3Gbps.
3Gbps (sata2) is perfectly fine for hdd since it's reaching somewhere up to 130MB/s write/read speed, but 3Gbps would be limiting ssd drives (my ssd is getting, in real life, somewhere up to 480MB/s, which is more then 3Gbps).
I also heard lot of horror stories about hdd in optibay, but for now, everything looks fine on mine.

c. just as precaution I always de-activate Photoshop, when doing reinstallations. Maybe it's not necessary, but I still prefer to stay on safe side, then bugging with Adobe support if something would go wrong, and my license would be hanging on some previous, long gone installation of my laptop.

I have Super Duper so just made an image of my SATA drive. The Image from Super Duper is bootable. The booted to that and restored the entire image to the new 512 SSD. End of story. That is all it took.

The stuff is getting shipped by my brother from the US - should be here in 3 days.

- Will be installing the SSD in the optical drive slot - as both my drives are only SATA2 speed.
- Will be doing a clean install of Mountain Lion and use the migration assistant to move only those apps that I really need. Three years and I do have enough garbage in the machine right now.
- I will most probably de-activate CS6 and reinstall it. Will be a huge pain if something does go wrong during the transfer as getting anything resolved sitting here in Dubai will be a challenge.

Nice, gives you a fall-back OS image if you keep it around.

Whatever you do, keep in mind that SSD failure rate is much higher than HDD.
