Is now a bad time to buy a new 70-200 f2.8L IS II?

Well regardless, If I were OP, I'd wait a few months to see if the lens could be had for under $1900.

Edit: now that I think about it, I remember something funky happening with a price match, despite Amazon stating they don't price match. Still, the price would have been maybe 1800-1850ish.

Lowest price was ~$1975. With cash back or amazon goldbox, around $1900 (except special cases due to somebody messing up or a combo deal with a camera). After using and thoroughly enjoying the lens for a year and , maybe starting to forget the hefty price tag! :D

Picked mine up before Christmas last year for $2075 from B&H. I love the IQ with this lens on my 7D. Although I'm glad I got a decent deal, I wouldn't be unhappy if I'd paid full price, after seeing what it will do.

Thank you all so much for your responses; I really appreciate it. Does anyone know during what time the holiday rebates and deals start appearing? Anyone remember what time last year?

I mean, if I could save an extra $300 that would be nice.

Actually, holiday did not really end for Canon this year. Except 1-1.5 months, there were continuous rebates since last December. It looks like holiday rebate for 70-200L II was same as now (http://www.the-digital-picture.com …s/Canon-Lens-Rebates.aspx (external link)). I believe Canon did not enforce minimum advertise price last holiday season so Adorama/B&H were able to sell it lower. I'd wait if you are not in hurry (and keep looking for a used one meanwhile) but don't get disappointed if it does not get any lower. However, 2X$200=$400 rebate when you buy with a camera is pretty much guaranteed to show up in next a few months.

I've seen quite a few used copies showing up the $1900 range on eBay and sometimes on Amazon.

Hello again,
I'm currently thinking of buying the canon 85 f1.8. I want a good portrait lens by Sat. but I'm afraid if I buy this, and then the 70-200mkII later on... the 85 won't get much use... Anyone have both and still use their 85 f1.8?

I'm just thinking I can wait and save extra $ for the 70-200 to go lower in price (hopefully), and with that money I can buy the 85 f1.8 for now... Good idea or bad?

What Rick said. But you have to decide if waiting is worth the price drop or would rather start using the beast now.

Is now a bad time NOT to buy a 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II?
