I had the opportunity today to shoot my first bench. It's a metal bench because I can't find any wooden ones by me. Anywho, I shot this with my 50 1.4 and my 40D. I cut the feet off because I didn't want to lose the awnings in the background but I sort of lost them anyway. I tried shooting this as a portrait too but the left side didn't look right. I'm going back there later with my 5D Mark II and trying this shot again. But I think I'm on the right track...

Why? What is so important about distant OOF awnings?

And to add - If the awnings are important to you, step back a bit to get both the awnings and the feet in the frame. It's called 'Zooming with a Prime' ;)

You might also want to try focusing on the front of the bench (side closest to you) instead of the far side of the bench. Let the dof do it's thing, but you may want to step down to get the whole subject in focus.

Kirk, I was already about 6' away from the bench. As you can see I got part of a planter in there on the right. I went back with my 5D Mark II and even though I had my ISO set high (shot a wedding with that body and forgot to set the ISO to 100 or 200) I think this one came out much better. I was able to position myself next to that planter and get the shot without the planter in the frame. :)

Also, I think the awnings add a vintage look to this shot. Not too many towns still have awnings. The town I am originally from no longer has awnings. I remember when the shot Road To Perdition in my town they (Hollywood) put up awnings to give it the town that 30's look they were looking for. It really looked cool.

I would prefer a bit more angle to the bench to help lead the eye into the photo better.The last one that's chopped off doesn't do anything for me.

I know. That's why I didn't do any processing on that last one. I was sort of showing what the 40D was allowing me to capture in the setting I was in. I probably could have done 2 shots and stitched them together. I just thought of that. Maybe next time.
