I am shopping for a laptop for my Wife and planning to spend about $800.
I planning to get her a Dell, 14" as her old 15.4 is too big and heavy.

Should I buy one with SSD HD included or just buy one with a SATA drive and spare HD slot then add a SSD HD on my own?

If you know of a best bang for the buck Laptop in the price range, please help me out.

Meanwhile, I am searching at:
http://www.techbargains.com/ (external link)
http://www.tigerdirect.com …d-_-Computers-_-Spot%2002 (external link)

I live in CA and don't want to add on the tax so I plan not to go with Newegg

Thanks for your help in advance!

Consider Lenovo, they can be good prices and they're well built.

Re SSD, do whichever's cheaper. Much easier to have it installed by them of course, and keeps the warranty.

I like Lenova too. I was thinking of Dell 1st then Lenova 2nd, but after some searching, now Lenova is on top.

They only have 32GB SSD pairing with 500 or 1T GB, I wish they have 64 or 128 SSD.

add the SSD yourself and install the OS on that drive. Use the sata to house your files.

Do all Laptop have the extra space dedicated for 2nd HD (SSD) or depend on the model?
Is the warranty voided once the Laptop is opened to add SSD?

I believe you could remove the media bay/optical (CD rom) and replace that with a SSD .

I have a dell and bought a hard drive adapter bay that replaces the cd/dvd rom drive. If your cd rom drivef is removeable you should be able to install an adapter bay for ssd/sata.

I do not want to loose the CD/DVD drive though.

How often do you use the CD/DVD drive?
You could listen music online, and watch movies via Netflix.

You could invest in a portable CD/DVD when needed.

How can one install Ms Office without a CD/DVD drive?

I was looking of the Lenovo IdeaPad Y480, but I think it is way to much for my Wife to just use it for basic Ms Office, Web and paying the bills.

I use SSD on my Desktop and love it so I really want to the SSD on the laptop for her but it cost a bit much pre-built :(

For what my Wife use, it is too much laptop with an i7?

I am thinking of just get her an i5 (2nd Gen.) for about $400 then add an 128GB SSD ($100). Is this a good idea?

You download it.

About the only software you can't get by downloading now is the operating system. But that can be installed from a USB stick.

So long and thanks for all the flash

If she isn't going to need an i7, get the i5 and save a few bucks.

You don't even need an i5, an dual core i3 with a small SSD will be easy fast enough, light, and will have great battery life. I see little to gain by having 4 cores.

Thanks Tim. I will check to see how much it would turn out on the best i3 + SSD
