in a very VERY unscientific poll, i have found that amongst visitors to Michigan's Mackinac Island (in the straits of Mackinac between the upper and lower peninsulas) Canon Rebel DSLRs are the overwhelming choice of camera...

the family and i spent the weekend up that way (all day saturday in Mackinac City, sunday on the island and today walking the Mackinac Bridge) and i only counted two, three at the extreme most black world cameras...

i saw one 7d (other than my own), one that was probably a FF with an L lens on board and all the rest Rebels with kit lenses. ill bet everyone of them made great memories for their owners...

Selling the rebels is the way canon creates their lead in the market

.

yes, that's unscientific but Rebel models probably do outsell other DSLR brands

I think that Canon's branding in the entry-level market is partly responsible. A stylized Rebel T3i will probably appeal more to the average consumer than the relatively impersonal D3100

Rebels have always been the big sellers. They get a new model basically every year because the target audience looking for an affordable DSLR like the weight, size, and (relative) ease of use.
I wasn't surprised the EOS M looks and feels like a consumer, wants a light, simple, "mirrorless T4i". It appears to be selling well, which means its a success for Canon.

Personally, I don't like the look and feel of the Nikon entry DSLRs. The have a cold, hard, plastic look to them to me. Sort of like the T3. Feels and looks "cheaper" IMO.

T2i to T3i to 60D to 7D to 5D MK II in 2 years and 3 L lenses. WTF I was thinking.

I noticed as much in NYC this summer when I went on vacation. A lot of tourists, a lot of cameras. A lot more Canon's than Nikons from what I saw, but easily 90% of the people I saw on the street had rebels of some type and kit lenses. I saw one L lens and it was while I was on the boat cruise to see the statue of liberty, and it was a 100-400 on a rebel body. They are small, affordable, and relatively simple to use. It doesn't surprise me that on an everyday outing the main brand I see are the rebels/entry levels. I saw quite a few red T3's (it is the T3's that come in an optional red colour, isn't it?). I think its great more people are using DSLR's :)

Around here, I see a lot more NIkon cameras. Mainly D70, D80 and D90s. Last summer when I went to Moab and Arches, it seemed like every European tourist had a Sony NEX5. And I still see more people taking pictures with an iPhone than anything else.

We were on Mackinac Island the previous weekend. I saw a few Nikons, but more Canon Rebels. One other person on the ferry had a 5D2 -- he asked me to take a group photo. He acted a little confused when I handed him my 5D3 to take a photo of my wife and me, as he had his auto focus was set at all focus points (which confused me at first, as I never shoot that way) and I had mine set to a single AF point. He asked if I had it on manual focus.

We live in Plymouth, which is less than 15 miles east of Ann Arbor. It is a four hour drive to Mackinac for us.

Crap, at the events I shoot I see all sorts of things.... Every brand of DSLR and point n shoot, plus various vid cams, phone cams.... I've even started seeing people shooting vids and/or stills with their iPads, which looks ridiculous.

Go to Flickr... check out their statistics (external link) on what cameras were used most to make images on the site. You'll find iPhones are the two most used... Canon 5DII is third most used, and Canon T2i is fourth most used. But Nikon D90 is very close to T2i. 5DII is dropping fast in recent months since the 5DIII has been introduced and people are upgrading to the new model.

You need to be careful using stats like from the Flickr site. If anyone claims they match market share, a quick check of the stats will see that does not pass the common sense test... The "Most Popular" chart has the 5DII as the top camera (not counting the phones). So, we are to conclude that the 5DII commands greater market share than the Rebels?
