My daughter and I did a little comparison while we were in Las Vegas, I forget the final count but we basically counted all the DSLR's we saw while walking on the strip, Canon was the obvious camera of choice with most being Rebels. Nikon obviously second but it was something like 1 to 5 and Pentax 3rd. What I think is that Canon has a lot of loyal customers who used their point & shoot digitals so when people graduate to DSLR they reflect back on their Canon P&S experience which have always been top reviewed cameras.

Also this is a tourist spot, like the posters location, so maybe the average tourist uses Canon while more serious photogs may choose Nikon. At a professional event the count may be quite different.

We live in Plymouth, which is less than 15 miles east of Ann Arbor. It is a four hour drive to Mackinac for us.

yep. pretty familiar with plymouth. broder bros, versa-trans are big suppliers for screenprinting and the like and they are both in plymouth. thunder valley powersports on york street has worked on some of my vintage motorcycles...

My older daughter has a Rebel T2i and it is always on auto. She just wanted good quality images and no shutter lag. I think I have used her 70-300 more than she has.

Canon selling more cameras, even if the folks never take them out of the box, is good for all of us.

Michiganders: I recently spent time on Mackinac with my 7D. I did not bother to check out the other cameras, but I am not surprised at what you found.

(FWIW, when you go back some time, the second boat in the morning out of St. Ignace goes out under the bridge before going to the island. Great shots from an angle you don't normally get. Also, it is Mackinaw City, not Mackinac City.)

ill bet everyone of them made great memories for their owners...

I'll bet every one of them (Rebels with kit lenses) could have been easily replaced by a decent point and shoot and have made equally great (and in some cases BETTER) memories for their owners.

Well I don't think its good for all of us, because that's why Canon is on comfort zone where they are only improving the easy of manage. And they are not worry about improving example the 18mp sensor. Because they are selling a lot of rebels not because they deliver an outstanding quality, they are selling just because "it's a Canon" and such users are not demanding High ISO improvements, DR improvements.

Partially I agree, the rebels are very capable on the right hands.. But certainly probably they can get better pics with a good P&S or maybe a bridge.

I'm a total newbie and just picked up a T2i recently. Got a killer deal on it... I look forward to graduating up the chain and even trying out a buddy of mine's Nikon to get a feel. I have to admit I was tempted to go with a Nikon as the action on the lens seemed sooo much heavier/smooth...but when I read a few comparisons on models from Nikon to Canon the Canon won out on a good number of them. For now I will just focus on learning everything I can about this equipment and maybe pickup a few lenses when I have some more disposable coin. :)

Speaking of that, if you are into landscape...what is the best entry level upgrade in lens you'd recommend for someone?

And why does this matter? As long as these folks enjoy taking photos and are happy with the results, who are you to even give a hoot?

Not being a market analysis type, I can't say why they are selling, but your claim that the Rebels do not offer outstanding quality and have not been ramping up the sensor tech is just plain wrong.

Compare the high ISO performance of the 450D to the 650D.

You may not value video, but the market does, hence the improvements in the 650D sensor aimed primarily at video.

Most beginners do not even know what DR is or why they should care about it.

As of April, 2011 Canon owned 45% of the interchangeable lens market and Nikon was second with 30%. http://www.bloomberg.com …igital-camera-models.html (external link)

I think the green box mode is quite popular. I have been handed dSLRs cameras many times by strangers to take group photos, and they are usually on the green box -- including a young lady with a 7D and "L" lens at Fairy Falls in Yellowstone. I have seen people shooting wolves at a few hundred yards in Yellowstone, or shooting Niagara Falls at night, with their built-in flash popping up.

We have good friends that live in Raleigh, NC. A few years ago one of them bought a Rebel and wanted to take photos of her daughter doing indoor dance. I noticed she was in auto mode when she handed me the camera. I suggested a photography book to learn how to use the camera to accomplish her goal. A few years later she handed me the camera again, and it was still in auto mode. I laughed and commented "never read the book, huh?"

Some people just are not interested in investing the time in learning photography. There is nothing wrong with that. Everyone has different priorities.
